20 Minute Mix -- Approximately 50 Tunes. HELP. Posted on: 29.10.2012 by Jovita Schulist Hi.I'm looking to make a 20-25 minute mix with a TON of songs in it. Mainly drops, but obviously some buildups and some breakdowns. Now.. Do you believe I am better off using Ableton? Or is this possible to do in Traktor? I just got the s4 yesterday from a friend to borrow. I am comfortable with 2/4 track mixes. Watcha believe? Jed | |
Beverlee Bedrin 31.10.2012 | I'm not an anti-sync guy or anything but mixing that many tracks in 20 mns isn't gonna sound good or be an impressive mix. The way I see it, it's more of an arrangement if your doing it in Ableton or something similar, and in a sense is more like a 20 mn track. Back in the day when djs did this, the main reason it was impressive was because it was physically hard to manually beatmatch that many tracks in such a short amount of time. Valeri Holderness 31.10.2012 | its not that its impossible on traktor/serato, etc. you can do it and make it sound good depending on the type of music you do and how skilled you are. hot mixing, drops, cuts, blends, etc. are your friends in this situation. 50 in 20 minutes is fairly excessive (most djs probably don't play 50 in an hour) but if its something you want to do, then the best advice I can give you is just get to work and start building your mix |

Nedra Cheff 31.10.2012 | Haha! No just pointing out the tools i would use. The Madeon video is just an extreme example. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 31.10.2012 | You're not seriously suggesting he try that, are you? |
Nedra Cheff 31.10.2012 | Ableton + Launchpad + Mixed in Key = Madeon Live Mashup |
Lawana Spratlen 31.10.2012 | 100% Ableton. As a starting point id run some tracks through mixed in key |
Chong Mine 31.10.2012 | Sounds a bit gimicky no offense intended |
Latia Sotak 31.10.2012 | @Stereo:Type That mix is a total monster!! Seeing as I work for the company that owns XFM, i'm pissed off that i've only just discovered this mix! ......i'm busily grabbing everything downloadable with your name on, on soundcloud! :-) |
Malissa Mountcastle 31.10.2012 | Ableton all the way for something like this. Even if you were going to do it live, you would have to edit each track to help it fit in the time constraint, and once you've done that you may as well just sequence it out. The credit should go to you for making that many tunes in that space of time sound great together, not whether you mix it in traktor or ableton. You hear mixes where people cram 200 tunes into 5 minutes, and i've yet to hear something like that come out in a coherent manner. It just sounds like loads of bits of tunes stuck next to each other with no real blending between them. Granted you may need to do some of this in a mix of this nature, but surely the whole purpose of any mix is both track selection, and how well the tracks work with each other? I did this mix for XFM here in the UK a while back, and it's been hailed by the station as the best 10 minutes they ever put out. 84 tracks in 10 minutes... [end shameless plug] I don't believe it would have come out sounding nearly so clean if i hadn't have used ableton. http://soundcloud.com/stereotypemashup/stereotype-xfm-top-10-mix |
Kiyoko Wellisch 31.10.2012 | Mate, you beatmatch 50 tunes in 20 mins on vinyl and you will get some mad respect from me ;P |

If I were attempting it I would want to be using ableton and would have a very carefully planned and tested track listing. And I certainly wouldn't be doing it in one take :P |
Emerson Crist 29.10.2012 | Cuepoints will be your friend. Ive never done 50+ songs in 20 min, but I believe if you can edit the tracks properly, in Ableton or in Traktor, you might be able to pull it off if you can beatmatch quick enough. |
Beverlee Bedrin 29.10.2012 | Do it on a platform that doesn't auto sync for you and then you'll earn some cred. |
Janyce Henningson 29.10.2012 | Have u tried plugging the S4 into your computer and having a go? That's where you'll find your answer. |
