Kiyoko Wellisch 09.11.2012 | Oh me too- I do love knowing as much as I can about any gear I might stumble across. I'd like to get a little more knowledgeable when it comes to ALSA and then write a comprehensive .asoundrc file and start up script for xwax so in the end I'll be able to plug it into whatever interface I fancy and it automatically identifies the card and launches xwax with the appropriate flags.
Never gunna happen though :P |
Emerson Crist 09.11.2012 | Kinda is vital. One of the things I pride myself of is before playing out, I do as much research as I can about a venue. Even if its a friends house, I like knowing whats available and what are the specs and conditions of the gear
. If there is some gear
im not familiar with, I do a quick google search, and figure out my best option, most likely the one with the least amount of hassle.
In any case, knowing that a DJM900 has four available inputs, two of which are open about %75 of the time in any club, is something that any aspiring DJ should know by now, especially when lurking a community
like this. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 09.11.2012 | We were talking about knowing the DJM900 had a soundcard in it. That's hardly vital knowledge. |
Trula Willadsen 09.11.2012 | Actually, it is the same thing.
He does not understand how to hook up his controller to a DJM900, ergo he can't use the kit well. |
Kiyoko Wellisch 09.11.2012 | Not really the same thing, you don't need to understand the kit to use it well. |

Key word there. Chap's asking for info, give info.

Because the mixer section on the S4 sucks balls and all I'd be doing on the S4 is hitting play. If anything I'd probably just use keyboard shortcuts and leave the S4 in a bag.

Plug in DJM with shredded USB cord

Open up Traktor, have no idea where the settings are, ask SM
Attempt to figure out how output routing and external mixing work, fail, ask SM
Correct output routing with SM's help, set to external mixing after SM yells at you about it
Test output, output fails, ask SM
SM checks the input switches on DJM, still no output
Figure out that the Nexus utility was incorrectly set up, repeat process from Utility settings step until you have the correct routing out of 7 options
Test output, output works
Attempt to play set with your controller and mixing controls on literally different planes of existence on the stage
VS.
Plug RCA lead into back of mixer
Match the input switch
Set S4 on the top of a case
Play.
ITS NOT LIKE I'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS BEFORE.

Because virtually every person with basic sound gear
knowledge should know that. Also the phono inputs on DJMs have caps on them.
If you don't have a basic understanding of sound gear
, you shouldnt be touching sound gear
. Just hand your stuff to the engineer, and ask him nicely to make it do sounds good for you. You'll most likely break something important the minute you touch anything on the stage.

Using the S4 as a controller only. If I was dependant on the S4, I would at least do that. Use the 900's soundcard and you have a way better sounding mixer than the S4, not to mention more FX and filters and I almost cant live without the Gate/Comp now. |
