I have 500 dollars and need a PA System

If I could spend under 500 dollars for a PA System + Stands that'd be awesome. I'd mainly be playing House Parties and Small bars.

Also do you believe I could get away with one speaker for now at a house party?

I've used my rokit 6s for parties at my house but not out at a venue. I suppose if the place was 20 or so people it would be OK but really not the greatest idea.

Well monitors aren't amplified at all.. Its the raw sound. So personally I would say No

Throw in stands and wires and you'd be right around $500

Studio monitors are made to be extremely accurate, but not made for high volume.. The best starter option is an active system that you can add subs to as you take larger gigs. Start with 2 tops, and you can expand to 2 subs and 1 top on each side. After that go the passive way. Eventually it will give you more power. But for now take a look at the mackie thumps, easily the best option for now.

renting for house parties isn't the most cost effective option. It would prob cost a min of $100 a evening for the house parties. So say you rent speakers 5 weeks in a row you could have just went and bought 2 speakers. If you want something better just save up some more. I only rent when I'm doing shows or stages over 500 people. Buy 2 decent tops, save up a few weeks, buy the matching sub.

IMO, dont spend all the money on a sub-par sound system, you will regret it later. Use the money to rent out a system, then keep saving, id say at least $1000. That can get you a very respectable sub, speakers and if needed an amp. In my research to find a decent, portable sound system though, your ideal budget should be about 1600-2000. Yes, thats a lot to save for some speakers, but its a long term investment.

If youre not looking for long term, then dont bother wasting money on a cheap system, just rent.

Mackie Thumps 100%. I've had mine for well over 5 years and have never had any issues.

Do you plan running cables 20+ feet? if so you would want to balance the audio by either plugging the RCAs into DI boxes and running XLR cables or hooking up to a mixer with balanced outs.

If your in Chicago, all you have to do is hit me up. I'm getting rid of my EV eliminators + amp.

Sounds like my basic situation. For awhile, I was rocking this:

with this:

For a house party, it was more than enough, and for small bars, you shouldn't have a problem. The Phonic system survived some serious abuse for about 5 years in several bands I was in, so they're definitely durable.

A pair of Behringer B212D and your budget is pretty much spent, if you were really thrifty you could get stands and cabling for $500 but I wouldn't count on it. The B212D is a good, lightweight powered speaker, lots of bang for the buck, sounds good on top of the matching 15' or 18' powered subs Behringer makes. Later on if you choose to upgrade, they would make good monitors.

My problem with Craigslist is that I don't know what to even search because pa system isn't giving me anything. (I'm close to Philly)

Speakers aren't cheap. You MIGHT... MIGHT be able to find a used B-52 for that price, or a pair of something else. But my best suggestion would check craigslist for what's in your price-range.

No matter what though, it's not going to be the best and you'll want to upgrade. But everyone has to start somewhere.

The other legit option is to rent them, esp. if it's only going to be a few parties. Check out people/places that rent basic PA's for a day/evening and see what goes from there. This is probably the best option until you can afford some solid stuff.
