DJing/Production Software/Hardware Advice

I'm currently using Traktor Pro with the Vestax VCI 100 with DJTT's custom midi mapping. I use NI's Audio2DJ as a sound card to split output and cue sound. At the moment, I'm a bedroom DJ but soon looking to move onto live gigs.

However, I've just got a license for Ableton Suite 8 off a mate who runs a studio (had a spare license from Ableton for being a loyal customer or somethign!?). I've put it on my computer now, and it looks very interesting.

Just wondering how easy is it to DJ with Ableton Suite 8? I quite like the idea of being able to produce my own music and have it in a DJ set with 'normal' tunes ready to go at the press of a button.

Also, anyone got any thoughts on the VCI 100 as a controller for Ableton to use in the live arena for DJing and playing self produced stuff (once I get my head around it)? Not read good things on VCI/Ableton link so far. I have actually considered using the VCI 100 for crossfader, jogging, playing, effects etc and then buying the Novation Launchpad to use with it to play the different clips, but looking for advice on direction really.

PS - APC40 is way out of my budget at the moment before the suggestions come flooding in!

I have yet to delve into any Ableton Live specified controllers but I can say for sure that it can handle to completely different controllers as I use my DDM4000 and a CDJ-400 with it sometimes.

It seems as though the internal mapping for the Launchpad will work for you in terms of what you want to do with it. As for the VCI, the mapping will have to be done manually, or you may find some on the internet somewhere.

Just make sure that Ableton Live is able to recognize your VCI as a MIDI controller, and if it works, then you should be fine if you want to introduce a Launchpad.

Yeah, I get that. That's why I was considering the VCI and the Launchpad. Already have the VCI and the Launchpad is way more affordable than the APC20/40.

Was consider how well it would work to hook up both to Ableton, then have the VCI control the 'usual' DJ controls such as crossfader, volume fader, jog, effects etc and then basically have the Launchpad lined up for all the clips within Ableton. This way (I believe) it would give me best of both worlds having a 'real' feel DJ controller in the VCI but also the ability to stutter clips spontaneously etc with the Launchpad.

How would Ableton handle two controllers, especially two completely different controllers?

In terms of DJing with Live, that is a whole other world. Live's entire purpose is to serve one's own personal needs and workflow, therefore, mapping your VCI would entail discovering the entire program to see what you want to do with it. However, there are really good videos out there to help you get started and get an idea of what kind of workflow you'd like to setup, but in the end, the final decision in terms of effects racks, layouts, and MIDI maps will have to come from you.

The APC would be great for that! Also, I believe it was Bento that posted a whole article on how to route your traktor output into ableton, that way you can have the best of both worlds! There is also a wealth of information on this site regarding how to go about using ableton in your dj sets.
