efx1000 effect trick in ableton?

i was watching this and wondered if you could do the stuff that is done in the first minute of video in ableton using a controller with enough knobs and buttons(or pads).i have recently started using an mpd32 with a program called guru for beats and am believeing of buying a sequencing program.i know there is a program called max for live but dont really want to spend more than the initial suite to start with.i believe the efx has a sort of tape delay which james zabiela seems to know how to take advantage of with the feedback at 100%.does he only use delay for this trick with the kaossilator over the top.hoping someone can let me know what they believe.[youtube]http://www.?youtube.com/watch?v=-qSBF3KF5VA[youtube]

thanx again guys.make no mistake though i dont believe i could even begin to understand max for live anytime soon but i thought if i had the demo of live(not max) i could put some of the advice i was hoping to get to the test.as for the beat repeat i can see how that would work i believe.the efx unit has buttons for 1/32 1/16 1/8th etc so im guessing i could set up different beat repeat units for this and have them mapped to my mpd or nocturn.then on the chain i could add effects i wanted.im not really after crazy effects but i want to have complete control over the effects im using.i love the effects in traktor but feel as though im just effecting the music quickly and then straight back in to the groove.after watching the zabiela stuff he seems to use the efx1000 to add elements to the tracks when they're needed using what i thought was the delay on the unit with feedback at 100% to get a loop and then do as he pleased with it.im using a vci with traktor and the djtt mapping so when i get a loop using the sampler i can play with the slice parameters and use the echo(delay) but dont feel that i can do anymore as these are set up on efx 3 and 4 as 1 and 2 are used for other effects but are at the beginning of the chain so wont effect the sampler(3) or delay(4).i dont want to lose any functionality from the tt mapping by changing the setup as i love the way the fader effects work with the effect settings provided(although i dont use setting 2 at all and not often 4 come to believe of it),so i thought about linking it up with live.apologies if you feel its a really simple one im gonna check out s4racens stuff soon thanx.

how do i check out s4racens stuff

ps.the efx buttons would work with 1 press until the next button is pressed eg 1/16th tap once then 1/8th tap once then 1/64th so you can sort of play it but if this was midi mapped then the only option i would have would be toggle or hold which wouldn't be the same.is there a way to do it?.

That can all pretty much be done with ableton's "Beat Repeat" which is a default device in ableton, also maybe a little bit of "Filter Delay", another default device. I thought i was going to be hearing some crazy effects, if you want to see what can really be done with Ableton check out some of the effects S4racen's designed.

From my experience 30 days of Max4Live is nowhere near enough to grasp what you can do with the program, it's so powerful that virtually anything is possible with 2 or 3 different solutions for each problem...

Can't see the video at work so left this as a placeholder to come back and have a look later....

thanx for your reply drew.i dont have live yet but will get the demo for the 30 days to get familiar with it.its only the first minute i want you to look at if you get time mate.i've googled how to recreate efx 100o effects in ableton but found nothing clear on the subject.i would like to set up my mpd 32 to act as a sort of efx1000 in ableton and link it to traktor.i've found loads on syncing the 2 programs and am hoping it can be done with the mpd32.i've also got a nocturn if you believe that would be a better option.i cant work out how he cuts up the beats by pressing buttons.on other vids of his i've seen he would cut up a beat and then sort of transpose it up or down but the beat stays quantised,im believeing the granular effect in ableton could maybe replicate this?.hope you can help pal

^^gone a bit off topic.2 questions now

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, and i'm too tired to check out the video(just got done with a show). But, yes it can be done in ableton... pretty much anything can be done in ableton if you're willing to put in the work. I wouldn't get max4live unless you're familiar with max, as it has a whole new set of things to learn. When i get up tomorrow i'll take a look at the vid and see if i can come up with a live set that emulates whats going on.
