Where to start...

So I'm a DJ, as most everyone on djtt is, but I want to learn to produce.... BAD. What I want to know is whats the best course of action for starting out producing in this day and age? I mean it seems like ableton is becoming the big boy of production suites, but I have zero experience with it. I've been dabbling in logic, but I feel like I can't figure out how to actually make sounds or do what I want with it... I just can't get things to sound the way I envision them. I want to be able to come up with a sound or tune in my head, and put it into play with a DAW.

Basically, I just want the most approachable option for production available, and I want to actually start putting things out there. Any advice on starting out as a producer would be helpful.

Thanks-- DJ Gleebs.

You're not going to be able to make the sounds and songs you want to right away, it's going to take time. you need to gain the experience first, and that's something that will come naturally.

All I can do is just find one DAW you like off the bat, be it Ableton, Logic, Reason, Cubase and so and work with it. Don't be jumping around from DAW to DAW, VST to VST expecting to find a quick fix, because you won't.

You need to learn how to subtractive, granular and modular synthesis works, and start messing with it. Need to learn how to properly apply effects to create the sound you want, learn what a compressor, limiter and gate do, and learn how to properly apply them to obtain the sound you're looking for.

Just jump in there and start doing it, For what we do, that's the best method. This board is all about DIY, and that applies to producing as well. We'll help when we can, but a lot of stuff you're going to have to learn on your own as well.

I dabbled in Logic at first, but then realized that I prefer sampling other songs so moved to Ableton. Basically I just watched and read tutorial after tutorial after tutorial. There's no better way to learn than by just going in and doing it.
