Best program/s for Drum 'n Bass production?
Posted on: 23.11.2010 by Shelia Salzsieder
I'm a DnB/Trance DJ but want to start producing some DnB, I haven't done anything like this before (apart from Ejay back in the day ) and was wondering what programs I could use and if anyone has any tips or websites that would be useful.

Thanks!

To learn how to slice up drum loops, take a look at these videos. Specifically you will wanna watch the one(s) on the Edison, Fruity Slicer, and SlicerX.

Once you get a handle on what your DAW can do and how everything in your DAW works you can search YouTube for the Producer Masterclass and Future Music videos to see how the top producers of today are making their music. Allot of these seem to be interviews with Drum n` Bass, House, and Dubstep Producers like Rusko, John 00' Flemming, Subfocus etc...

You don't really want to make drum loops from scratch. Not for dnb. Instead you wasn't to take existing loos and slice it up into the pattern you want.

Just use the kiss method. Keep it sample stupid. Professional engineers have done all the hard work for you by recording live drums. For dnb its not as useful to make you're own loops from one hit samples. The patterns are too complicated and won't sound as good as sliced up loops.

deviantdigi, I have looked on google, haven't found anything good about making DnB...
You might want to just watch those videos. Even if they won't teach you drum and bass specifics, they will help you start to understand how DAWs work. Even if every tutorial on the planet focuses on how to make house music (they don't - trust me), you can still apply what you learn about house music to make drum and bass.

This topic has been discussed, everywhere. A quick google search should point you in the right direction. I would suggest picking up FL Studio and use the various vsti's for it.

Bunch of really good, yet free vsti's here:

I've used FL Studio for about five years now, and actually I've started using ableton this week.

In regards to the best program to make DnB, it really is all up to you. You can use any DAW to make any kind of EDM, you just have to pick the one that works best with your work flow.

While I can't recommend any specific sites for tutorials, if you are still stumped for creating your own drum loops, open the "Club Basic" template and put in a pattern like this one:

From there, just start experimenting with hi hats. It takes a lot of time to get that sound in your head. Trust me though. You'll get there.

and the volume also fluctuates for no reason, goes really loud then quiet again if I keep on playing something.
Do you have a limiter on the master channel? With some templates, FL automatically places a limiter on your track. This might be why your volume is fluctuating.

Look on the mixer and on the master channel. It might be on the bottom slot.

If you ever want any advice or help, feel free to shoot me a PM.

To create your baselines use NI Massive. The wave tables allow you to get those morphing sounds. The excelent tube effects, and scream filters help a lot. Plus the synth comes with several patches that are perfect for drum and bass. You'll quickly find yourself saying "so that's where that sound comes from".

Layer it with a sub bass using a sample or low cpu synth of your choice.

DAW is your choice. Ableton, Cubase, FL Studio, and ProTools are the popular options.

All the Vengence sample packs are great. Especially the Kicks in the Electro House Sample Packs.

As well I would pick up XFER.
There are tons out there to find.

So you mean basically just get the hits and make my own loops? That's what they told me not to do...

Hey Dj there are loads of software ways to do this. Some better than other depending on what your after. Logic and protools have easy ways of strippin away silences or choppin up individual beat to leave the single hits behind. These are expensive tho. I like the free way use audacity to select the part of the audio file you need and export it. Hope this helps what your after. I would love a free program that strips breaks up into individual hits but I dont no of any out there. Wavelab does it but its not free or easy to use!

Here's another virtual MPC if your into controllerism. Its from SoniVox and is called the Pulse. A bit expensive but looks like it gets the job done.

Cheers!

Check youtube for tutorials on creating bass sounds on pretty much any soft synth.

Programming beats for D n' B is a different story... Know your breaks.
