What to do now. Live DJ v. Linerar mixing tools Posted on: 27.10.2011 by Jamila Citino So a couple weeks ago I got my Kontrol S2, been spending some time beatgridding my music, made a couple mini-mixes and I am starting to believe that my aspirations to doing live-DJing again might not be the best route and maybe I should really be considering more "linear mixing". I'm a perfectionist and the few mixes I have made so far are OK, but I want to add more complexity into it, and I am doubting the limited time I would be able to play with my S2+Kontrol will allow me to really master it to the point I am satisfied with it.I have played with Mixmeister before, and while it does a descent job with beatmatching, the effects are a bit limiting (far more limiting than what I can do with the S2+Traktor). Are there other solutions out there that will allow me some more creative control that I can do with S2+Traktor that allows me to do non-destructive linear construction of mixes? | |

Jamila Citino 29.10.2011 | Well complexity wise, making multi-layered mashups, unique transitions. I downloaded the demo and for the few minutes I got to play with it, it seemed quite a powerful tool (although a little cumbersome). When I got to playing around with some tracks and the S2, I was reminded that you can only really do so much in real time and risk the flow. I am a little disappointed in the jog wheels. I cam from vinyl many years ago and even though it's been ages, the feel is definitely a bit less "organic". Maybe my skills are just off too but scratching transitions are harder to be satisfied with so far. Then with the S2 I can stack up to 3 transitions per effects deck, which may be more than adequate in many cases, but once again pushing that envelope you risk bring in errors into the mix. But it also looks like I won't be able to sell my Kontrol S2 anytime soon, so I may be experimenting with both Ableton Live demo and Traktor. |
Dorie Scelzo 29.10.2011 | Ableton Live is exactly what you want. And you can do normal mixing with it too. |
Dino Houghland 28.10.2011 | What kind of complexity are you looking to achieve? |
Monserrate Rupnow 28.10.2011 | Ableton Live. |
Brunilda Kora 27.10.2011 | Ableton Live. |
