Mashup theory - how do the good ones do it?
Posted on: 16.11.2011 by Shalon Dejesus
New into the world of production and DJ'ing ... having a blast with the DJ'ing part but mashing up songs is getting me beyond frustrated.

I have a rather simple question. How do the good ones do it? Such as 3Lau, kap slap, white panda, etc...

Are these guys acquiring multi-tracks to new and popular songs to mixdown together, or are they doing it the hard way (filters and whatnot, to get that one sound out of an MP3 or WAV).

Just asking, because I've been trying through several different VST's in ableton to try to filter out sounds myself, and have largely been unsuccessful in seperating drums, leads, vocals, etc. It makes me wonder if i'm just spinning my wheels, and somehow theres a source of multitracks for songs I can get.

Thanks for any help

you can go with acapellas and instrumentals, they can be very versatile, but you can also get well acquainted with looping and EQ techniques... Acapellas and Instrumentals can get sort of crowded when you want to mix more and more together..
You can get almost the same sound you want with 4 songs on 4 decks VS 4 songs split up into 8 decks (isntrumentals and acapellas)
you can loop 8-16 bars of a regular track with no vocals during that part, and play it forever with another EQed vocal track playing over it.. or multiple... the possibilities are endless, you just have to discover them!

Another HUGE part is Key Matching.. make sure the songs you are mashing together are in the same/similar key or scale... other wise they start sounding horrible.. i hear unmatched mashes a LOT and it kills me lol..

I am roughly new at this aswell, however from what I gather you are truying to remove voice from songs? If you search the song title and instrumental you can usually find the instrumental version with no voice, or search title acapella to get just the lyrics. Not sure if this helps, but I hope it does XD
