Kicking EQ's for Noobs

HI guy's, Lot's of Sentence's ahead, with one main question

So yeah I'm a noob with no sound engineering background I just love music and making it. I wanna start posting my stuff up on sound cloud but I first wanna make sure I'm happy with it. I'll start of by letting you know that I use Pre Sonus Studio One 2.

So I mainly make house music, and I get my drum sound 's mainly from vengeance essential house 1 and 2 and the sample library from macshine.
How ever I'm really not happy with my kick drum. I can never seem to get that professional sharpness out of my kick such as from the likes of Dirty South, Avacii, SHM, etc. Don't get me wrong it's not like I want my stuff to sound exactly like there's or that I wanna be them, I just don't wanna give my stuff out to a dj one day and the song sounds crap because of the kick.

Usually when I put a kick, all is good till I put synths, Then I try put the standard Studio one compressor and EQ with presets such as The DB rock or some thing of the like, but when I do do this it drowns out the rest of the instruments, I've recently started putting limiters but then it sort of makes the kick sound very back groundish, if that makes any sense, I then Have to put alot of gain on the compressor.

So if you made it this far and have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. Oh yeah I also have the kjaerhus audio effect pack if your more experienced with that. Thank you

Yes, but he didn't link the work here, you did!
So you get the props for introducing the right answer for the right question!

Also, no one here is crediting you for the content in those links!
Or at least, I am not!

Most drums you get from sample packs have already been processed, so remove your Eq and compressors from those and try the mixdown without them.

Thanks to Mostapha for his wonderful articles too!

Basic mixing plus layering! Sometimes layering isnt the way to go but depending on your selection of sounds (if you choose a Good Hi,Mid and Lo kick) layering could be the juan technique you are looking for.

Hey!

mostapha is right for sending you those links!

It is important that you know all ways of mixing a whole track!
If your kick sounds good before you add other things, then your problem is not the kick choice but the mixing of the track!

There are so many variable here. Your kick sounds backgroundish because it's being limited TOO much.

You must make sure your master fader is never being hit at the 0 db limit when you are mixing. You can put 2 kicks on top of each other, maybe that will help strengthen it for you!

You can also sidechain your kick with your synths like Whyte said!

My recommendation would be that you learn basic mixing techniques which include - compression / EQ / leveling / sidechaining / etc.

EQ being a very important one because an EQ can do a lot when it comes to separating sounds from each other and so the song doesn't sound MUDDY or cluttered!

Try solo'ing the kick. If it sounds good, then solo another instrument, if everything still sounds good, then solo the next instrument and do this until you find the song starting to sound bad. Then you can unsolo/mute/solo instruments to find out which 2 instruments or more don't fit together and EQ/Compress them differently so they play fine with each other!

Good luck!
Let us know how it goes!

Thank you sensei Mostapha, So much of reading so little time. @Whyte I have but sidechaning on Studio one 2 isn't as helpful and easy as it is on FL. Unless I'm doing it wrong but when I place a comp on the synth, I then sidechain it to the kick and the kick is then muted.

And have you tried sidechaining your synths to your kicks ?
