Lahoma Flatebo 13.02.2012 | So, if you can get the vocal files (If you want to remix a song with vocals) that makes your job easier. Once you have the vocals then you can build the track around that, making sure the melodies and bass u create work with the melody of the vocals. Getting the vocals by itself is a rare thing, even though play.beatpor.com has some vocal tracks. Now, majority of time you're going to have to take the existing songs and EQ out as much of the instrumental as possible. That is an art form to itself and will take a while to get right. But once you "Ripped" the vocals then you can easily produce the rest of the track. If your remixing a song without vocals then you just have to figure out what the "Main melody" is and sequence it in a DAW and build your track around that. other than that remixing is an open field, you can do what ever you want or believe sounds good. Listen to other remixes and see how they are different than the original to kind of give you some ideas. My personal suggestion would be to do this in a DAW like logic, protools, ableton, etc. as you will have more control over the remix in regards to making it as original as possible; not having to rely on sample loops, as well as giving you more control over EQs nd compression. But you can do just fine using traktor or serato... you'd just be limited to using premade loops and nor as pinpoint EQing. just try it and fuck around, that way you'll you see what specifically you want to learn. Regan Berzin 12.02.2012 | thats the problem I feel, theres so many tutorials, its hard to know where to begin when your a newbie! |
Tatum Ansaldo 12.02.2012 | absolutely. Don't expect anything particularly amazing to start with, but it's a really nice way to play around. There are a million and one tutorials on youtube. |

Tatum Ansaldo 12.02.2012 | stems are the individual parts of a track (vocals, percussion loops, synth leads, etc). Go here: http://play.beatport.com/ and download a few (they're normally free) to see what I mean. |
Regan Berzin 12.02.2012 | probably going to sound like a total newbie, but what are stems? |
Tatum Ansaldo 12.02.2012 | If it's a modern track most big name producers will just ask the original artist for the stems. |
Tatum Ansaldo 12.02.2012 | Pretty much. Sometimes there's an acappella available, or with a lot of work you can isolate the vocals from a track using very specific EQing in a DAW. |
Regan Berzin 12.02.2012 | I always wonder how a producer does a remix of a classic 80s tune or even a modern day top 40 track. So they just snip parts out of the original track? |
Tatum Ansaldo 12.02.2012 | Check out beatport play (I believe that's what it's called). They release track stems free of charge for remix competitions all the time. |
Danuta Freyholtz 12.02.2012 | What do you want to do a remix with? Just cut up loops, or samples of the track. If you want just the voice try finding an acapella on the internet. You can also make acapellas your self with the original version and the intrumental. Check YouTube for how-to videos on that. |
