Daws & dual monitor support
Posted on: 01.03.2012 by Arnette Schmieg
Hey guys,
about to purchase my first DAW and was wondering what the deal is with various DAWS and dual monitor support. what i mean by this is, i would like the ability to have two windows open on two different screens. for example, i already know that ableton live 8 doesn't support this, but there is alot of buzz around ableton live 9 supporting this....i.e. you can have BOTH session and arrangement views open! AMAZING!!

my questions are,
whats the deal with protools 9? (support or no support)
reason 6...( support or no support) (it would be cool to have racks on one screen and arrangement view in the other.

thanks guys

also, anybody hear anything on ableton live 9??

The picture quality of a HDTV may not be good enough for use as a computer monitor...some are.

Ableton is just the place to be. I own several DAWs (check the signature) and Reason doesn't count among them.

anybody have any MAJOR gripes about reason 6 and why i should go with ableton?
i believe ima start with this DAW (reason 6) and work my way to ableton...
i dont want to get boggled down by all the different plugins and audio mod choices when i am first learning how to create and modify sounds to achieve what "noise" is in my head; the "complete kit" is very appealing to me for starters, i just want to know about any major pit falls if any to this program before i bite the bullet and purchase....

Also, via ReWire, I sometimes view a Sibelius score of whatever I have in live playing on a second monitor. It's like a carryover from my conducting career, I suppose.

Gre3nergy - Don't wait! While a lot of companies have very predictable release schedules/cycles/schemes, Ableton doesn't really have such an easy to predict one. I believe Suite 8 is a great product and it would be maddening to wait for 9- there's no telling when it will make its debut.

Is it such a big deal to press tab? The arrangement is visible (sorta) from the session view anyway. I've never understood some people's need to see both entirely and simultaneously, let alone on separate monitors.

I sometimes view an instance of Machine on a separate monitor from the one I view Live from.

yea...
alot of hype arround the bitwig studio DAW...VERY promissing...waiting on beta!

hope i make the cut!

also, what are peoples opinions on this shift in technology within the music culture?
with all these new controllers and software, is it worth waiting to buy a DAW at this time....alot of new things are coming down the pipline...peoples thoughts?

bitwig studio will include multi-monitor support. i believe live will follow and support it, too. haven't heard anything on 9, though.
