Remixes & Copyright

Remixes & Copyright
Posted on: 21.05.2012 by Sharmaine Pellino
Hi DJTT!

I've been remixing for quite a while now and I wanted to upload some of my work on soundcloud.
When it finishes it says that the songs contain parts of other songs that are protected with copy write.
I knew that ofcours, but I tought Bootlegs & Mashups didn't fall under this copy write infrightment.

How do I publish my own remixes?

Thx guys!

Cheers

And if i remember correctly, it states that bootlegs are o.k. because they're derivative work of art, or something like that.

Anyone can do a remix, it's distributing someone else's intellectual property that's the problem

Bootlegs are unlicensed remixes. I REALLY don't believe they would make it to the ok list.

Yeah.... they're not okay. If you sample anyones track with out their permission it's illegal. The only question is are they going to find out and purse legal recourse though

Whoever made the original song technically owns the copyright, so any remixes or bootlegs (and especially mixes) are technically illegal. If you're a nobody (like me), they usually leave you alone. But, if it came down to it, they original artist/label/etc. could file a lawsuit against you. And, since SC wants to cover it's own ass, they use software to detect copyright infringement. Plain and simple, don't upload anything other than original tracks to SC if you want to stay 100 percent legal.

Yep, technically DJ sets are against the soundcloud rules as well. They have software that scans the sets before they're made live and will sometimes spit that same message out to you. Usually though it's only on certain songs or songs on certain labels. I believe Sony and everything that falls under it's umbrella is a big player in the we own it and you can't do anything with it game.

Have you read what soundcloud says about it?

They something along the line of "Just because someone else posted something, doesnt mean you can and/or allowed to"

Unauthourised remixes and bootlegs are illeagal, plain and simple. I personally dont believe this is fair, but thats the rules.
