How To Get Your Music Blogged - advice for new producers
Posted on: 02.08.2012 by Dori Lebahn
Hello All - I've been running a music blog for a few years and I get loads of emails from people who have no idea how to approach bloggers and record labels effectively.

So in an effort to help people get their music heard I've been putting together this little guide on How To Get Blogged. It might be of use to people that are starting out. I get a lot of good feedback on this so I believe it does help...

I believe you know what's the godwin point. I developed a theory that on every music related thread, after a short period of time, someone will end up bitching about dubstep or skrillex. I'll call the the Godlex point.

You're SO pathetic, aargh, deep inside, I can't even explain how much I feel sorry for you.

Seriously, is that so hard to listen to stuff you like and that's it ?
Life is too short to waste time bitching. I lost 5 minutes because of this post, I hope I'll save you more than that.

You're welcome.

PS : I'm dead serious about that Godlex point. Find a dubstep track on youtube that has more than 1000 view. Click on show all comments. Ctrl F, type Skrillex. Bingo.

Well done, Jack! Much information in there!!
The lines I liked best were in your "about" though: "I say we, it’s just me. We just makes it sound important."

Well, this is the sad reality, isn't it?

Most blogs are really a clan for likeminded. If you join such a clan and contribute with things not related to your own work, then it's very easy to get acceptance into your music being mentioned later.

Absolutely great stuff! This will have probably saved me hours and hours of frustration and nice to hear from a blogger's perspective.

This series is f'in ACES! You're a scholar and a gentleman for putting this together. Not only informative, but hilarious at points ("...how you weep tears of musical creativity ,bottling them each evening and taking them to gigs to anoint members of the crowd who gather enmass at your live performances to bask in your heavenly glory.")

I always try to be sensitive to what bloggers need when crafting emails about new tunes, but I've never been quite sure how to format subject lines for the best response. That alone was huge.

All that said, I know your focus is on how to get blogged, but I'd like to raise a minor counterpoint, from the perspective of the producer.

Mainly, taking the time to draft a personalized email referencing a specific blog post. Put simply, I spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time making music. It's a labor of love, to be sure. But there is also literally ZERO money in it, which means I also have to spend a normal amount of time working, too. If there's any hope of me making any music that isn't complete and utter shit, that leaves very little time for promotion.

That's no excuse for stupidly written emails with bad subject lines or all the other mistakes you address. But I just don't have the f'in time to crawl blogs for posts I like and draft a personal email to 100+ blogs for every release. It just isn't possible with the number of hours in a day.

The middle ground for me has been putting together a mailing list that is relevant (i.e. blogs that do dance music) and personalizing the name i.e. "Hi <Blog Name> Team!" and keeping the track info concise and the email short, attempting to follow all the other rules you outlined (that I was aware of, anyway!).

This keeps my time investment manageable and the email personal and allows me to at least try to do the most important thing, which is make good music.

THANK YOU SIR, very interesting and eye opening articles!

I do have one question. When you say leave a comment on the blogs, I don't quiet understand what you mean! For example, on your blog were would i be able to leave a comment, i could be dull but i couldn't find a place to leave one ! Only on your post about "How to get blogged".

Thank you for your time!

Great posts loudat! Is it okay to share your post on by blog?

We blog to beginner-intermediate electronic music producers. This post would be helpful for my readers.

5. Write good songs, send them out to key people, labels and blogs. Usually the 'good' part is missing.

Part 1 - How To Get Blogged - written in frustration at the lack of help for upcoming artists
http://www.loudat.com/how-to-get-blogged

Part 2 - "Mailshot Basics" Written in frustration of the complete incompetence of Digital / Online PR Companies
http://www.loudat.com/how-to-get-blo...ailshot-basics

Part 3 "Introducing Yourself" written in frustration of people's apparent lack of manners
http://www.loudat.com/how-to-get-blo...ucing-yourself

Part 4 "Music Presentation" Basic stuff Written in frustration of the fact that people STILL send MP3 links / attachments
http://www.loudat.com/how-to-get-blo...c-presentation

Part 5 "Pulling Your Weight" is currently under construction. There are loads of ways not only to get more support, but to get RE-blogged. But this only happens if artists are willing to build on the efforts of a record label or blog. This will revolve around social media etiquette and a few hand tools that most people are unaware of that actually do boost your profile.
Once the olympics are out of the way I'll have some time to work on this properly. Swearing is a very time consuming process
