Which laptop?
Posted on: 05.12.2012 by Sandie Kristufek
I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm interested to know what other people are using. I am currently using a HP Pavilion dv6 (one of the early ones) and while it's been OK, it hasn't really blown my socks off and Maschine seems to hammer the processor.

Macbook Pro is an obvious choice but I have issues with Apple (mainly about the iphone so willing to swallow my pride if they are really as good as people say they are!!).

Main usage would for production, runinng Ableton and Maschine. Occasional DJ'ing (Traktor).

Anybody got any suggestions?

I believe that the Apple OSes requires less power to be run than windows generally which means that a less powerful spec macbook running mac OS will perform better than better spec PC running windows.

You could definately go with the cheapest macbook pro or even buy a used one, it wont be a problem for it to handle traktor.

$800 or so got me 3rd gen i7 , 8 gigs of ram, 1TB HD +32gig mSata cache drive, 1080P screen, DEDICATED GPU with 2 gigs of ram + Intel 4000 card, backlit keyboard etc..

Soon I will be replacing the 32gig mSata drive for a 256gig SSD and replacing the ram with 16 Gigs

So no, you don't need a MBP.
I did the same recently; DELL i7 Vostro3560 with 1920x1080 screen (perfect for traktor). Runs everything with negligible CPU load. No special performance tweaks required. A no BS, 100% functional and fast maschine. Great build quality, look and finish, backlit keys etc. Similar spec'd Mac would cost $3k+. and you still woudn't match the DELL HD antiglare screen. Best audio laptop I've had so far with awesome DPC latency specs straight out of the box.

Sager custom laptops.

- But I would buy 13" macbook with an SSD for portability/stability.

plus, macbooks can have issues too. i've owned one and it wasn't flawless as i had to spend hours troubleshooting audio and hardware problems with that machine as well. after about 4 years my hdd died so i replaced it but several months after that the whole thing crapped out on me and i'm not going to spend any money to replace the logic board or any other expensive piece as it was already pretty outdated.

also, i made the right choice for me and i was happy to spend a few hours tweaking my laptop (which may not have even have been fully necessary to be honest) in order to save over $1000 on a mac with similar specs. it saved me a few hundred dollars an hour to do a little bit of work.
I'm actually kind of with you on that one with 2 caveats:

  1. Do your homework. Know that the system can perform well for AUDIO (not gaming) before you buy it.
  2. Be okay with Windows

#2 is where it fails for me. I can't live without a *nix system as my primary. And even if I dedicated a computer to Music, I wouldn't run Windows on it, no matter the price/performance benefits or anything else. I can use Windows for normal things okay……but I have to believe about every little thing. On *nix, things just happen. And even figuring stuff out is easier (for me).

That's why I choose Apple. I also believe the *nix philosophy is just plain better all-around and don't understand why Windows does anything the way it does. But that explains my preference for the thing that makes me prefer Apple, not my preference for Apple.

Ableton, Serato, Avid, and Native Instruments are the reason I use Apple laptops…not Apple.

if money wasn't an issue at all i would probably buy a macbook pro, however the fact that i can get a pc with close or better specs for anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the price...i would rather used that saved money on other things. i have a dv6, i5, 8gb of ram and don't have any issues with traktor, ableton, or maschine. i did have to work out some bugs in the beginning and do some optimization, but after a few hours of that, things are running smoothly.

if i could have gotten a good deal on a comparable lenovo i probably would have picked one up, but i got my dv6 for pretty cheap at the time and didn't want to spend the extra few hundred. i use a 5 year old believepad at work...which i've dropped...twice...on concrete and it still works fine. some of them are built like tanks.

Macbook Pro hands down.

Can start dj'ing right when you open the box.

Macbook Pro. If you can't afford it, I'd seriously look into a Macbook Air and see if it meets the specs for what you need

If you can afford it.....macbook pro definately. It's by no means needed, but there's a reason they are so popular.

i have a HP DV7 8g ram, i5 and runs everything perfect. ableton runs smooth even with 15+ tracks of plugins running. no cpu spikes. i keep it for mainly music and thats it. nothing else goes on this laptop.
