Which laptop?
Which laptop? Posted on: 05.12.2012 by Sandie Kristufek I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm interested to know what other people are using. I am currently using a HP Pavilion dv6 (one of the early ones) and while it's been OK, it hasn't really blown my socks off and Maschine seems to hammer the processor.Macbook Pro is an obvious choice but I have issues with Apple (mainly about the iphone so willing to swallow my pride if they are really as good as people say they are!!). Main usage would for production, runinng Ableton and Maschine. Occasional DJ'ing (Traktor). Anybody got any suggestions? | |

Mimi Mahaffee 06.12.2012 | I believe that the Apple OSes requires less power to be run than windows generally which means that a less powerful spec macbook running mac OS will perform better than better spec PC running windows. You could definately go with the cheapest macbook pro or even buy a used one, it wont be a problem for it to handle traktor. |

I also believe the *nix philosophy is just plain better all-around and don't understand why Windows does anything the way it does. But that explains my preference for the thing that makes me prefer Apple, not my preference for Apple. Ableton, Serato, Avid, and Native Instruments are the reason I use Apple laptops…not Apple. |
Rocco Fiveash 06.12.2012 | Meh, I bought a Dell on the cheap with awesome specs. This thing is but fucking ugly, but it runs Traktor and Serato with ZERO hiccups. CPU load barely moves - if at all.. latency is set at 2ms, no drivers or devices to uninstall, no tweaks needed to be done. I unboxed , installed my software and away I went. I have put Serato on all four decks with filters, FX etc and the CPU did not budge. $800 or so got me 3rd gen i7 , 8 gigs of ram, 1TB HD +32gig mSata cache drive, 1080P screen, DEDICATED GPU with 2 gigs of ram + Intel 4000 card, backlit keyboard etc.. Soon I will be replacing the 32gig mSata drive for a 256gig SSD and replacing the ram with 16 Gigs So no, you don't need a MBP. |

Jolynn Schroyer 05.12.2012 | Don't spend hours doing any of that ^^ Just get the Macbook. You won't be disappointed. Literally buy the laptop go to your gig un package it and get the crowd going. |
Cole Maroto 05.12.2012 | if money wasn't an issue at all i would probably buy a macbook pro, however the fact that i can get a pc with close or better specs for anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the price...i would rather used that saved money on other things. i have a dv6, i5, 8gb of ram and don't have any issues with traktor, ableton, or maschine. i did have to work out some bugs in the beginning and do some optimization, but after a few hours of that, things are running smoothly. if i could have gotten a good deal on a comparable lenovo i probably would have picked one up, but i got my dv6 for pretty cheap at the time and didn't want to spend the extra few hundred. i use a 5 year old believepad at work...which i've dropped...twice...on concrete and it still works fine. some of them are built like tanks. |
Jolynn Schroyer 05.12.2012 | Macbook Pro hands down. Can start dj'ing right when you open the box. |
Dorie Scelzo 05.12.2012 | Macbook Pro. If you can't afford it, I'd seriously look into a Macbook Air and see if it meets the specs for what you need |
Inez Marcinik 05.12.2012 | If you can afford it.....macbook pro definately. It's by no means needed, but there's a reason they are so popular. |
Ervin Calvery 05.12.2012 | Macbook Pro. |
Lillia Datson 05.12.2012 | Macbook definately. |
Syreeta Piela 05.12.2012 | Macbook Pro all day.. Had one for 3 yrs and would NEVER go back to anything else. Especially for DJ'ing/Producing.. And everything else ;-) |
