Got a mini budget for music production, any tips on good & budget vsts/plugins?
Posted on: 12.01.2013 by Rodolfo Oriol
Hi. I have a budget on 230 dollars. I'm believeing of buying "z3ta+ 2" and native instruments "elements komplete". As far as I have seen, these give me a HUGE opportunity to develop my own sound (z3ta & native's synths), to try alot of different sounds and plenty of audio effects to play with.

I'm using ableton 8 intro. I have started to produce tracks that is a mix of drum and bass and a bit of dark "rave" combined with bass music.

My question is:
Do you got any tips on vsts/plugins/presetbanks that fit me? I've looked around the internet VERY much hours. But if you got any recommendation, please tell me !

Why now?
= I have ableton intro and I want more. I have synth1 as my main synth atm. I use ableton's audio effects and got some free vsts/plugin but I want some real quality vsts/synths.

thanks.

Plus U-HE have 2 smashingly great free synths in Tyrell and Podolski. But for $230 Maybe Massive as its just such a diverse beast for digital sound. You can pick up used soft synths on KVR community s also for less than retail. I poured over soft synth reviews everywhere and these names kept popping up:

Massive (NI) (I own it and love it)
Razor (NI) (I own it and love it)
Dune (synapse AUdio)
Alchemy (Camel Audio)
Zebra (U-he)
Diva (U-He)
Predator (Papen)

You have a really huge point here.
My mind has come to that I'm gonna buy z3ta+2, because I really like this synth. I like the interface and the contents of it (not the presets including..). I'm gonna develop my own sound on that, and MAYBE use some of the presets there as a basis of the sound. I'll try to learn and use these free effects that people posted here (thanks!!) and use them as effective as I can.
PS, if your wondering why im so restricted: I'm 14 years old and therefor I dont got a job, all money I've spent is from christmas/birthdays.

And yes, I'm going to upgrade my Ableton, but I will upgrade it to ableton 8 "standard" (and getting ableton live 9 on the run!). Maybe in the future i'll upgrade to suite.

sylent1 is wonderful...

but i would also evalutate an option that no one here has mentioned....
Tone2's Gladiator. Is just EPIC... sounds great and BIG.
Massive is a beast coming to automation, step sequencing ecc... but his oscillator sound too weak and poor when compared to other VSTs

+1 on what Luxi said ! Save up for a higher version of Ableton !

If we're talking about VST's , Sylenth1 is my favorite VSTi for synths

For master plugins and , and for the mix down stage , Fabfilter Pro Q is my favorite ! You can download a month demo from the site then decide if you want to purchase from there!

This is a pretty cool distortion plug in, if your more into a sampling based work flow.

Plus there's a free 'limited' edition of the plug in with way less features.

Well i see u r getting the point and that is really good. With that kind of mind set it is no problem to get a nice synth vst and learn it to develop some cool sounds and U-He has all quality stuff so u wont be really making a mistake there.

Check all of the stuff TAL hast got under the link. I recommend the NoiseMaker in particular, a great synth, there are also some quality tutorials on it on Youtube. Don't forget to download the effects as well, I use them all the time.

I can recommend Massive as well, it's one of my all-time favourites, but if you're on a budget try the NoiseMaker first, maybe it's got everything that you need. Also you can get a Massive-style Dimension Expander effect for free via Xfer: http://www.xferrecords.com/freeware/. If you need more sources, just search or ask again

Yea I've seen KVR and I have a full folder of free audio effects from them. They're really good.

But, some of the free things, some of them are gold, some of them is meh. Currently I'm using synth1 and it's a great synth for being FREE, but does it got the quality as etc z3ta, omnisphere, massive, sylenth1?

I've tried many free synths/instruments, they're good but the quality of the banks/sound is not enought for me.
Because, most of the time, the stuff you buy, is better than the free stuff. It got more quality, more banks/presets, more tutorials etc.
But there is also free things that are gold. If you got any, please tell me, or if you got any other things that is essential when creating music please tell me too.

You can get everything you need to make music for FREE. There are free versions of everything - synths, samplers, DAWs, FX (compressors/reverb, etc...)

Have you seen KVR? LOADS of free VST's (effects and instruments). Paying for Massive, etc, won't allow you to learn any quicker.

I've got KRK's KNS 6400 Studio Headphones, KRK ROKIT "6 studiomonitors and I use my traktor s4's built in soundcard.

Z3ta ia a great synth, but if my budget was only $230 I believe I would spend that some other way. Do you have a soundcard? Monitors (or at least decent headphones)?

NI's Massive.
