Why going down the wrong path can sometimes put you on the right track:

+1, its hard to perhaps accept that, but you'll be better off since then you'll have found YOUR sound, not someone else's

I believe it's natural to emulate people at first, its the only reference you have. But totally agreed, if you're going to be in this for the long haul at some point you need to find your own sound, and not just copy the current trend. Because all trends fade over time, and you don't want to be tied to that.

Great post, as we were just talking about this in another thread.

So very true tho, i believe the last 8 tracks i wrote started out with the mindset of "im gonna try and write a funky, maybe a dark, progressive house track" which without fail turned into really melodic, spacey, borderline trance songs. But whatever, because they all turned out great. Not what i was initially looking for at all, but a good track is a good track, and to get there sometimes you just gotta go with the flow.

It can be frustrating to not recognize your initial vision, but there is something to be said for "taking the blinders off" and perhaps seeing there is another road to go down with better scenery.
