New producer, tips on 1st track
Posted on: 06.03.2013 by Elvis Woodis
Hello all,

So I've probably been using Ableton for a couple of months now (not counting Jan/Feb due to work and exams). Watching hours and hours of tutorials, reading tips etc online. Feel like I'm finally getting somewhere and finished a track a few weeks ago.

I've started to use this site a lot more, and respect the advice I receive on here, so here is my latest (1st) completed track.

https://soundcloud.com/darksideofdisco/the-secret

Any tips whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to go for a deep techno vibe.

For Ableton, check out the ArtFXStudios tutorials on youtube, just search for the user.

Hmmm musical background....well I gave quite a few instruments a go but I was never really any good (or never stuck at it long enough to be any good at it), so piano, drums and believe I even gave the flute a go. When I started Uni I started running my own clubs evening so basically listened and watched the DJ's and figured out the make up of tracks so I guess thats your first bit. Knowing how a track is built, and when to drop things in/take out etc.

I believe I've made it sound well due to the Sylenth1 which is a fantastic synth. Not that I've figured out how to use it all entirely yet. Other than that my musical experiences are pretty limited. No musicians or singers in the family, I just love music and would love to make a lot of my own stuff one day.

Good luck with it dude. The advise I just keep getting, is stick at it.

Nearly finished another track which I should have uploaded today. Will post it on here once it's done.
Awesome Joe, thanks for the information. Always like hearing what type of background influences producers grow up with and how it affects what they create. Funny thing, I also learned piano, a little bit of drumming, and even a few years of saxophone tossed into the mix. Piano though by far was my strongest, and was "classically" trained but never felt like being creative or composing since anything relating to piano seemed like a chore when growing up. Parents were very pushy with lessons, i.e. you're grounded if you don't practice heh.

Took a break from everything music after high school as I wanted to distance myself from it and also at the same time found cars/tuning/modding world. Came back after about a 10 year hiatus, but am finally doing what I've always truly wanted to. Dove right into DJing about a year ago and picked up it up pretty quickly, but am finally just now starting to make some serious progress with Ableton as far as understanding how everything works.

Currently work full time at a desk job, but also attend school full time for audio engineering/sound design to get certified as an audio engineer and receive a degree at the same time. I'm left with only a few hours a week to focus on making a new mix and learning ableton, but summer break is coming up and I expect to put some serious time in and make something awesome.

Sorry for the novel, looking forward to your next track, but looks like it's down at the moment.

I've just started working with Ableton, and am hoping to jump right in. I'm sure I've watched the same countless hours of tutorials you have; any tips you might have for someone struggling to start a new track? I'm also curious what type of musical background/experience you had that allowed you to pick it up so quickly, and clearly very well.

Thanks Vpech013.

I've had a look at the Utility and seems like a good function. I will give it a whirl toevening and let you know the results.

I'll probably repost the track after these changes.

Thanks for the feedback. So just add a bit more compression on the kick do you believe?

Hi guys!

So I've finally finished another track. Life has been mental with work, exams and holidays so only managed to sit down at my computer for a few days and finish one off. Seems to be a slow process for me at the minute, I'm sure that'll get better with time.

Anyway, here it is. I tried to make the kick less subby, by lowering the DB on the EQ Either and adding a Utility. Let me know your thoughts..

Thank you all for the feedback.

Antifmradio, thank you for the tips. I did feel the kick was a bit much so I'll try a little EQ'ing and see what comes out. I'll also give the alternate clap another try.

I've started on another couple, which are a bit groovier and hopefully have them finished next week, but who knows.

Thanks again for all the feedback and I'll keep going. Really enjoying working with Ableton at the minute.

ok just checked out the track
honestly, i listen to music sent to me every day of the week from labels and this is one style i get from a couple more major producers on those labels
It gets distributed to 10,000's of recipients so i wouldnt worry too much about its structure.
Its just about sounding like a finished track with the exception of that bassy kick you got going on there.
How to hide that? Well i would eq it down a bit.
Adjust the CENTER of your eq to a higher "k"
it will lessen the amount of LOW we hear but wont add or take away or even distort the high that you move into.

Im talking about using a Parametric Eq in this case

Also, if you want to liven up the sound a bit
you have that CLAP CLAP CLAP.... CLAP-CLAP.

Come up with another clap sound. Instead of using the same one on a 4 count. Use it for the double clap
and use the NEW clap you come up with on the 1,2,3 count. It needs to be a bit muted if you will.

Its one of the sounds and tones that carries all the way through the song we its something we are going to notice quite a bit.
So give it a more LIVE sound and not so autonomous

This is a prime example of what I was talking about in another thread, just in reverse.

If I had got to this track first I would have said, "the sound quality is good, but the structure is pretty repetitive and really not a lot is going on here at all." Then we have Tarekith saying you should pretty much have a record deal asap. Thus apparently i know NOTHING about deep techno. I like some techno, but i dont get this style.

Which reinforces my point from the other thread that feedback depends 100% on who is listening to your track. Since i write progressive house im used to big sounds: big leads, thick pads, groovy drums, a faster tempo, and something new happening every 8-16 bars. That to me is a good track. This song has none of that. That being said, its because im comparing apples to oranges. We can learn a valuable lesson from this tho, just because its not someones thing, doesn't mean its not a good track to the right ears.

But evidently you hit the nail right on the head tho man, so kudos to you, and keep up the good work

Can send to labels pretty quickly

I don't believe you need to compress anything, I believe you need to EQ out some of the excessive sub on the kick. Take off 3dB at 40Hz, or maybe highpass at 40Hz. Maybe try and bring out a little more of the mids in the track too, say a 1-2dB boost 1kHz. Nothing a good mastering engineer couldn't do too

Otherwise I'm jealous, this is rediculously good for your first track, I'd be really shocked if somebody didn't sign this if you shopped it around. Good job!
