Persuade me to switch to SSL

Right then!

Been using Traktor for a number of years now and have a Turntable background but recently I've been getting frustrated with Traktor's reliability and quirky issues with timecode vinyl.

I've never tried SSL but do own a Twitch so I have a starting point with Serato.

What I want to know is if timecode response is more accurate and reliable in Serato. Also do users enjoy Serato more? I'm finding Traktor....erm, bland and a bit German for my liking ( no offence intended Germans).

I'm sure many threads similar to this are already out there but please respond.

I'm currently at the point of ditching digital altogether and going back to purely vinyl as I enjoy it far more than Traktor. If Serato brings back some soul and pleasure then i'm in.

All usb 1.1 interfaces (ttm57sl , sl1, etc.) will not work properly on i-series cpu computers running windows os. So basically either you switch to mac or use cpus prior to i-series. Otherwise you will be in problems.

What about The Bridge? Can I run that without the interface?
I haven't really dug into the bridge but I plan on it soon.

It's way more dummy proof than traktor. I had memories of freaking out seconds before show time because my Audio 8 was acting up. Basically you plug in, add track to deck, play!

Who out there has the Serato software installed but doesn't own the Rane hardware? I know I can't run it properly without a Rane device, but it would be great to be able to set up all of my crates and playlists ahead of time, show up to a gig with my laptop and play without having to set up my own gear. Na'mean?

The verdict is I haven't made the purchase yet. Had decided to go down to my local shop and buy an SL3 package but then news of the Pioneer Aero hit the net and I stalled. Gonna demo that unit first as it tick a few boxes I require (wireless not being one of them however).
Can only afford one purchase currently and would like both as they do very different jobs (may buy a 2nd hand sl1 too if i get the Aero as 2010 mac).

Appreciate all your feeback guys and hope to have something positive to add re Serato soon.

you will need a SSL interface to run the bridge as you have to have SSL and Ableton open to run the bridge. SL1's go pretty cheap on Ebay these days, or you can look for a TTM57 or a Sixty Eight

I was trying Traktor and always come back to SSL. Like guys say: library management and simple interface and midi mapping is what is best on SSL. Only thing I miss from Traktor is FLAC support which is non-existent and midi out messages.

Looks like i'm buying a Serato interface next week then. Worst case scenario I sell and go back to Traktor with a small financial loss but I reckon i'm gonna love it.

Cheers guys, will post back when I'm up and running.

This! Haze put me onto Serato, and while I own both platforms, Serato is my DVS of choice. It's dead simple and works tightly with the time code.

im SSL till i die so i might be a bit biased, but theonly DJ friends i have that dont use Serato are the ones that spin house music, and Traktor is what came with their Pioneer DJJ T1's, other than that, we'e all SSL

Late 2010 MBP Dual drive i5 with 8 gig Ram. My laptop is rock solid...Traktor isn't (although it used to be).

Tried the new timecode but still wasn't happy. Maybe i'm just fussy and won't be happy with Serato either.

Are you using the 2.0 timecode records? Apparently they improved it quite a bit, although I never had any issues with the original one either. If you're having reliability issues, you may want to look over your laptop as a whole... The software itself is rock solid.

traktor should be more responsive than serato as it uses a timecode signal at 2500Hz, serato is 1000Hz... The difference is traktor hogs more cpu because of the effects... But with a powerful enough computer & proper settings theoretically you should be able to get better timecode control in traktor...
