new to dj - few questions

Hey guys, Been bedroom djing for a few months now, just using virtual dj with a cheap $5 usb soundcard so i can PFL my songs. recently downloaded trial version of traktor, it seems more technical but obviously better in the long run. I like doing it as its fun and i want to improve and take it further.

Ive done research for midi controllers and keep coming back to the vci-100 or the total control from numark.
The vci seems better but also costs more.....

Just wondering the vci works with virtual dj aswell? im aware it comes with a version of traktor, i believe " LE " ?

Once i have either controller, do i still need to buy another soundcard aswell? because currently i cant get to PFL my songs in traktor, and dont want to have to go and spend another hundred ontop of the vci unit to get it to work properly.

Or should i just purchase a second hand set of cdj's and a mixer for roughly the same price as the VCI-100 unit instead, and focus on that aspect, since this seems kind of pointless in the long run.

Why wouldn't it? As long as it is MIDI mappable in the software, it shouldn't be to big of a problem.
Traktor LE is enough to get you started at first.
But if yuo are like most people out here, you'll want go out and get with the regular Traktor pretty soon.

no no, very helpful. i agree they are different completely....

definatly not saying using midi control is pointless, maybe just less impressive when only used alone??? is maybe a different way of saying it.... obviously with my skill level it is more then enough...

either way, picking up a total control for now tomorrow, 2nd hand but like new. cheap to.... Ill go from there...

Thanks mate

Yea, you are going to need a soundcard. The VCI-100 (and TotalControl for that matter) only send MIDI messages to Traktor, they do not produce any sound. You could use your build-in soundcard, but you probably only have 1 output, so you can't cue your songs in your 'phones, which is kinda lame and useless in that case .

You will need RCA cables running to your PA and that's pretty much all the RCA cables you need.

Hmm... That is a bold statement, and I must say I disagree with it. CDJ's + mixer is a whole different route then controllerism/Traktor. Also, if you can find 2 good CDJ's and a good mixer for the same price as a VCI-100, I'd be suprised. I'm not sure which aspect you are talking about, but if you are calling controllerism pointless in the long run, I would advice you to look further into it. I'm not saying that you are wrong, and I'm not trying to put you down, trust me. I'm just saying that CDJ's and controllerism are quite far apart, each with there own strenghts and weaknesses.

I would never buy CDJ's, but that is my personal taste. It's a fast spinning, seeminglee groove-less disc that you can't touch, doesn't work for me... One day I might venture into DVS, because I like vinyl, but for now it's controllerism.

Hope that helps, and keep posting if you need help .
