VCI Acade button Mod - DIY hole drilling?
Posted on: 06.04.2008 by Xavier Emanuels
Anyone know a cheap DIY way to make the holes though the VCI (i have the older style with the beefy steel).

These are the arcade buttons i have been looking at because the http://www.happcontrols.com has been down the last couple of days.(Atleast i cant access it anyway, i am getting 404- page not found errors). Also this place will probably wind up cheaper for me to order from.

Also will that locking mechanism stand up to what i need it for, or should i be looking for a screwing mechanism? Or will superglue keep it snug ?

Could you photograph and or video your work....I am also looking to get Arcade buttons on my VCI-100 and can't find a proven and well documented way. I appreciate anyone to give me some more options and suggestions.

Hole saws are bad news especially if there is some sort of preexisting hole. Hole saws require a pilot bit in the center. even those with bits will walk and hole will not be the exact measurement. I used to build race trucks for a living and even with $150 hole saws and $15000 drill press, errors can happen. for exact fit go smaller and file or dremel to spec. Just ordered my buttons today. I am just going to file to what i need and use filler and paint the whole vci so i can label it. Im in to rush, i want it done right, not right now. I will photograph progress and post for any interested. hope any of this helps.

If worst comes to worse and you mess up the holes you can glue a sheet of acrylic plastic onto the back of the VCI-100 case, fill the holes with two pack car filler and start again

Just another part I've found on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/14-26mm-TITANI...d=p3286.c0.m14

I'd like to attempt this mod myself without going to a specialist but I need someone with metal work knowledge to let me know if it is possible (on a budget) without destroying my VCI-100 case.

So, are you saying if I purchase this following product:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BOSCH-24mm-PRO...d=p3286.c0.m14

And if I attach this to an ordinary power drill then I can make my own holes in my VCI-100? If this is the case then I believe I'll go for it. However, if some more technical persons among you can advise me then that'll be great.

I believe the safest option if you are not that confident is to file the holes out carefully.

This site does sell a kit with a pre-cut vci case, arcade buttons, and a step-by-step guide. You might just wanna buy that.

first answer the following question:

if i break my vci case, can i afford to buy another vci to replace it if it comes down to it?

if yes

then = go for it

if no

might wanna look into selling yours and just buying a premodded one (unless you can pay ean to mod yours? not sure if he'll do that)

23 mm, I dont believe you will be able to drill that without a mill... will need to be a hole saw.

I would love to see that! Good advice from an experienced metalworker and video proof that it can be done by ordinary mortals without major trauma would be very valuable.

Also, don't let any worries about language barriers get in the way. Just use your native language, make a kickass video and I'm sure we can find some willing helpers to translate the result for all the DJTT languages.

what is with am Core Drill 26mm?

I come from Germ. and make a apprenticeship as a metalworker since 3 years.
I have drill many holes in metal and i believe a core drill was a good choise. Beacause the steel from the VCI-100 Case is not bigger then 2,5 or 3 mm. By my Drill machine in the hall i can chose the rotation per minute. With a Core Drill (size 26mm) you can nothing do wrong, my experience!

Maybe i load a short Video or some Pictures when i do such holes for exaple by the VCI 100 Projekt!

The most professional results come from using a laser cutter and building a completely new faceplate from scratch. I'm lucky enough to have a TechShop just up the road where I can use one for $30 a day.
Thanks for the great DIY drilling instructions! i am tossing up between doing this and taking it to place down the road that does the water jet cutting - though i have no idea how much they will cost.
