Hitting play on 3 deck simultaneously?
Posted on: 11.01.2010 by Sharleen Binckley
I have a play button mapped for each of the 4 decks in traktor. Only thing is though I can only seem to play 2 at the same time. Say I have one deck playing and the remaining 3 cue'd up ready to go, when I hit play on the 3 buttons only 2 of the decks play and I have to hit the 3rd one separately. I'm using an external QWERTY keyboard to trigger everything and so now I've got a sneaky feeling someone is going to tell me it will only read 2 buttons when pressed together. Like a 2 key polyphony as such. Is this the case? Will I be able to play 3 decks simultaneously if I have a midi controller as opposed to a QWERTY keyboard?

Thanks

I knew you were going to say PC, Im willing to put money on it that its a Mac thing. If it is I am going to be gravely disappointed in apple! The reason I say its a Mac thing is because I have tried it on my nanokontrol and it works fine, but when I try it on my macbooks keyboard it doesnt want to know, the USB keyboard is an apple keyboard which is basically an external replica of the macbook keyboard so it doesnt work on that. The only other option is to try another USB keyboard that isnt made by apple, but I dont have one in my house so will have to wait til I get my hands on one to try.
The nanokontrol is going to be used for FX so I dont want to map that up for playing the decks.

If you have traktor on quantise mode they should all launch together regardless of delay from fingertips (unless you push the play button a whole beat after pushing the first one). Have you tried that? Also, are you running a PC or Mac?

FYI I am using an external USB keyboard. So are you saying that on your system you have 4 buttons mapped for play/pause, 1 for each deck, and when you hit 3 of them at the same time with one deck already playing, all 3 will begin to play at the same time? As this is what I am trying to achieve.

apart from strange things happening (sometimes shit happens),
you should check the following:
- do the buttons just...work (physically speaking)
- do the buttons are already in use within your mac set up (generic macros outside Traktor as an example)
- are there any other functions linked to the 4 buttons you want to use?
- is it always the same deck(s) that doesn't/don't work
- are there any other buttons mapped to the same function?
- did you engage by mistake any modifier in your controller manager (it happens sometimes - you could check on the controller itself as it shows you if a mofier is set up)?
- did you select your keyboard in the controller manager or is it in conflict with another controller using the same midi channel?
- is there any modifier within your play/pause mapping?
- are they all set to toggle (play/pause)?
- are they all set individually to a specific deck?
- are you running Traktor pro

It's common sense but worth checking, you know sometimes you forget simple things - well, it happens to me on regular basis
Really you shouldn't have issues mapping those play/pause functions on your 4 different buttons but hey, it's a strange world!
