Spin / Typhoon Output LEDs
Posted on: 06.07.2010 by Corine Kasman
Had a play with a Spin toevening . Interesting little controller. Only played in Traktor, but the overall feel was better than what I expected.

Has anyone got the output LEDs to work? If so, what midi note and channel are they on? Every mapping I looked at does not have them working (unless they are not midi, but they don't follow the output knob either). Apparently they don't work in DJay either.

The only time I saw them flash was when I hot plugged the Spin... (so at least I can confirm there ARE LEDs under the plastic!).

Phil.

I take it you mean the PFL meters beside the gain sliders in the basic Typhoon mapping. Try this and see if it makes them more useful: change your LED range (they are called Monitor Deck PFL Left for deck A and Monitor Deck PFL Right for deck B).

Note ___Old Range___New Range
F2_______.0 - .2_______.0 - .6
F#2______.2 - .4_______.6 - .7
G2_______.4 - .6_______.7 - .8
G#2______.6 - .8_______.8 - .9
A2________.8 - 1_______.9 - 1

This makes the level more usable I found.

Let me know what you believe.

I farted around with the Spin some more this morning, so far the potential seems good.

What is the general consensus on the sound card quality? It seems to be the weak point in the chain. When I hooked up my AK1 things started sounding much better. Is the ASIO4ALL or ASIO4TYPHOON 24 bit? The native CoreAudio is 16 bit, but not sure it would make much difference based on the D/A converters in the hardware being the same...

The sound quality on the built-in soundcard really isn't bad at all. I honestly cannot tell the difference between it and my Audio 2 DJ soundcard. I'm starting to just use the spin's soundcard solely to have less things to lug around. The only thing that bothers me is that even if the sound isn't peaking traktor on the track peak meters, it seems show it in the red on the controller, I'm almost incapable of mixing with just looking at the controller for the tracks volume levels.

sorry i got you confused with someone else who posted about their mapping glitching on them, I didn't mean it in a mean way though

Including the official Typhoon mapping I found on the Vestax website.

I haven't see many videos of the Spin or Typhoon in action. I'll have to watch a few, but would like to know if those LED are midi mappable and what their notes are. If the TSI you are using has them working, would you please post it (or tell me where I could find it on the web).

Man you have the worst luck with these things, the typhoon map fixed all of this for me, it was setup to show the output volume and the peak volume meters. I tried mapping some other LEDs but it was a no go, cause the unit would crash every time I clicked on a button that lit up due to my modifications.

Could you explain your setup? Those lights aren't mappable, they are with the hardware and what not, when I got my typhoon hooked up to my computer and play something (outside of traktor as in a mp3), the level meter is active and I can hear it.

@crankcaller
The line faders are fine, a little lighter than the VCI-100. The x-fader is "loose", more loose than light, and is the low light of all the controls on the Spin (no biggie to me, as I rarely use the x-fader).

The EQ as faders is cool, just a different feel than knobs and really easy to see their position. If they would have had 1 more per side this thing would be incredible.

Overall I'm pleased with the unit, especially in it's price bracket. The jogs have a good feel (almost exactly like the VCI-100) and the buttons are faultless (the LEDs are another story, and easy to read in other threads).

oldfashoined and flashflooder have started some good TSIs with the potential of the unit really opening up.

Can I ask you guys what the faders are like on the spin?
I'm looking to upgrade from my x-session pro; which has really loose faders.

Are the faders on the spin more smooth like a dj mixer?
also - how is it using small faders instead of pots for the eq?

I've made the sync button's flash to the beat since using the typhoon mapping didn't have that but the spin does

I just use the asio4typhoon driver plugged into a pioneer amp and it works perfectly good.

Hey Phil, I currently have the Typhoon running on windows version of traktor and I have LEDs working fine, I also remember seeing videos on YouTube of the spin and i'm certain they have LED's working. I had a friend come over with his mac and did not have mapping for the Typhoon so he downloaded a spin one but some features were different, when you used an effect knob it changed the headphone volume and led lights were all different. So I cannot help you in giving you the notes or channels due to the fact the Typhoon is slightly different, unless it was something wrong with the mapping of my friends or something.

EDIT: I also did some experimenting and got certain LED's to flash to the beat and stuff.
