Diogo Dj Dragão 02.08.2010 | I believe the biggest problem with the Otus is just that they have pretty terrible distribution. You can't get your hands on them very easily. Other than that they're great controllers. |
Wilma Quinty 02.08.2010 | @vicious Great post, I believe you hit the nail on the head with the fact that the Otus has not been marketed correctly. I don't know why (seems like a great device on paper)? I wish I could find pro reviews from TechTools, SkratchWorx, etc... |
Benita Catrone 29.07.2010 | Funny, I was just about my very own post on this topic.... I've had the Otus for a little over a year and am sooooo happy with it. I've been looking at other controllers on the market and haven't seen anything that comes close to it (barring the vci 100) in terms of versatility and portability. I'm very suprised it hasn't blown up on the market, here's why: It's cheap. No really,it is. You fork out 700 (aussie) dollars (dunno what it's going for in the Us or Europe) and you get a state of the art soundcard, a controller, and bundled software. (yes it's Deckadance, but DD is actually not a terrible piece of software, and if this is your first piece of controller hardware, you're probably not that advanced anyway.) ---Thats much less than say, a pair of cdj's or even a VCI 100, considering you need that extra soundcard. When I bought the Otus, i knew nothing about mapping and latency and all that jazz, but was ready to go straight out of the box! It's easy and comfortable to use: It's got everything the VCI 100 has, 6 buttons for cue points on each deck. all eq knobs you could ever need plus a loop section that makes sense. The interface is nice and open. You don't need midget fingers to get in there and tweak. The way I've mapped mine, inspired by DJ TT (thank you) ive got an FX mode switch wich turns all eq knobs into fx parameter knobs and the cue point buttons into fx on/off for each individual effect in chained mode. No lack of control there... Portability... It's super light, fitseasily into my backpack along with laptop. It sits perfectly on top of a standard vinyl deck. No need to move anything around so when the next guy playing is on vinyl just pick it up and he can slap on his next record in seconds, around. Im not trying to say the OTUS is better than anything else, that all just comes down to personal preference. I'm just trying to point out that it has everything a professional laptop Dj would want, and yet very few actually use it. Why? Is it not being marketed properly? Is it ridiculously expensive outside of Australia? Granted, the pitch ribbon is a bit weird but is it REALLY that bad? You get used to it and, let's be honest, we all use the sync button... why wouldn't you. (you can start flaming me now). The only real problem i still have with it, (and maybe this is the fundamental reason why no one buys it) is the dual control. It's so much nicer, visually, to have a left and right deck to do your thing on. It slows me down ever so slightly having to take a second to look at what deck im controlling and switch to the other one. You get used to it, but its a bit awkward, and if you wanna do spinbacks or sratch on both deck at the same time, you're screwed. Having two controllers in one also makes you want to buy two of them so you can have four decks... which might ruin your wallet. So... long post. Why did YOU not buy an Otus, and why hasn't DJ TT done a proper review of it??? |
Antonetta Wikel 29.07.2010 | That's ok, I was believeing a nice setup would be an Otus or Otus Raw and an X1 as a side control for FX. That being said, I'm also waiting to see what this new NI controller is all about, as it's peaked my interest as well. |
Hanna Ridenbaugh 28.07.2010 | I believe it's more suited to mixing, when it comes to doing stuff with effects like Mr Golden depending on you map it I don't believe you would have as much control like a vci100. Having said that addition of a lpd8 or something similar would give you endless ways accomplish this as well as practice. |
Wilma Quinty 28.07.2010 | @SirReal No I haven't been able to play with one and that is why I am on the fence. I can see the benefits (no time-code, portability, dual deck control) but I am not sure what I would be giving up. I wish I could find more reviews out there. |
Antonetta Wikel 27.07.2010 | Thx for the feeback zimfella. It definitely looks promising but I really need to fiddle with one before I drop the coin on it and unfortunately I can never find one in my area. I was also worried about the touch pitch control but everybody I talked to about it said you get used to it real quick. That's why I was kinda waiting for the Otus Raw to come out and get reviewed. Maverick, what's your stance? Have you played on one yet? |
Mariah Itter 27.07.2010 | I believe i will get the raw when it drops, good be a good one to have me believes, i love to have options, vci300 and vci-100 and the raw could be a good edition, dont like the current one coz of the pitch. |
Hanna Ridenbaugh 27.07.2010 | I've got one and love it. Yes it is 2 decks in 1, you do get used to that very quickly, it's very portable with a studio quality sound card and the bag for it which fits a laptop to is perfect for when on the move. The touch sliders do get some getting used to but again just practice. Your mixing style would depend a lot more on how you map it for fluidity. The pre configuration map is a good start but I changed mine to suit myself. The software it comes with also is able to cutomisable. There is not anything else out there YET i would trade it for. As for the Otus Raw we'll have to wait who knows how long to see what its like. ciao ciao |
Antonetta Wikel 27.07.2010 | I've been looking at this controller and waiting for the Otus Raw to drop, considering both but I can't decide how I feel about "switching" between Deck A & B on one controller, worried it may compromise my mixing style. I'd LOVE to play around on one though. |
Wilma Quinty 27.07.2010 | The Otus can control two players plus your EQ and faders, so in theory you would only need one and it would all be MIDI. |
Dung Domingus 27.07.2010 | probably because of the price tag you are paying for mostly just a jogwheel. you can get a cdj 800 for that price. |
Emilee Woytovich 27.07.2010 | i was wondering this too! It looks pretty good but haven't seen much about it anywhere? |
