Mapping Two Controllers to Separate Instruments in Logic

I want to map a Keyrig 49 and a nanopad to each control separate instruments in Logic 9. I have currently tested changing the channel on my nanopad (midi ch2) and setting the instrument set to channel 2 midi. However the nanopad can still control instruments that are record enabled and set to instrument channel one (or any other channel). I have tried using the "auto demix instruments" setting also but this has not fixed it.
