Best DJ setup for Ableton ?
Best DJ setup for Ableton ? Posted on: 15.01.2011 by Valeria Bringle Hey guys, i'm pretty sure this question has arealdy been posted but i cant find a proper post on it... What is for you, the best config to DJ in ableton ? i spent quite a lot of time trying to find the best setup but sometimes the simplest things like looping on the fly become really complicated.. Ableton is great for its effets and the use of VST ( like effectrix ) Live.. but it s really hard to find a nice setup right now. If someone got a good experience with that , i'm really looking forward to it . Thanks ! | |

All the tracks are prepared in advance, so while the set isnt planned, random requests aren't do-able, i tried it a few times and no doest go well, als o i run audio, every midi track during a re-edit is frozen and flattened. I use the clip launch to give the set some degree of automation, ie if a clip has looped for 32 bars, chances are i've taken my eye of it so either stop it or launch the next clip, the routing goes like this 3 audio channels containing parts to one buss channel to a side of the x-fader to master out. both sides of the x-fader contain the same audio info so that my set list is fixed but the order i play them is completely flexible and i can add elements of one track to another. One thing to watch for is harmonic clashes. this is fine for special events but for regular djing i use traktor duo with a template i made for the launch pad and some keymapping, allows a more spurr of the moment vibe. |

Audrey Pinda 25.04.2011 | I honestly can't get my head around DJing with Ableton. Maybe it's just me. I really enjoy using Ableton as a DAW, and the original purpose of buying it was watching videos on how people use it as both a DAW and live control / DJing. I can see in the future potentially wanting to route the signals through ableton for the support, or trying to kick up "the bridge" for some interesting combinations, but it's ultimate customization almost seems limiting to me. Which is backwards, I know, but it's almost like having so many choices, you don't know where to start. I guess I just prefer the more on the fly aspect of mixing two tracks without a rediculous amount of prep work involved to get things "just right" for me. Call me a perfectionist when it comes to chopping tracks with Ableton, but that's what bugs me the most. I find myself often trying to do things that would be simple using Serato or Traktor, but is innately complicated with Ableton. Ableton is a great tool, but for a lot of instances, I really believe the primary built DVS software really takes the cake. (And this is just within my personal experience, I realize everyone has a different perspective). |
Rolanda Clodfelder 25.04.2011 | I just "finished" my fairly comfortable DJ Layout for Ableton .. I'm using an APC40 BTW. By comfortable I mean no layer switching or needing my head stuck in my laptop all evening .. pretty much straight on DJ'ing plus the ability to mash things up a lil with sample decks and FX switching on the xfader pretty intuitively. 4 decks / 4 sample & FX decks (mirrored from main) to returns for EQ. Mirrored FX all channels EQ on returns 1-4 FX on one knob Macros Metalize, Beat repeat, Gater, Reverb, Pitcher, Filter, Phaser, Fade to Grey The way its set up its pretty easy to sample / play loops on x-fade between the "Live" and Rec sample channels. Maybe it'll inspire I dunno. screeny attached. |

They will let you do some really cool things in addition to the regular modes, including controlling devices using banks of 8 LED sliders (why this isnt an option by default is beyond me), really easy recording of clips and a really cool clip slicer that works with any audio or midi clip. you can do real beat juggling in a clip rather than just glitching it up like you would with effectrix. I'm getting a nanokontrol today from someone for 25 bucks so I have something more portable to bring with me rather than my APC40. Love the APC but it's not fun to ride the subway with. He also has a nanokontrol script that I'll probably get... |

Look into MIDI Katapult for the Launchpad, which will open up HUGE doors for you. Unfortunately it's hard to completely divorce yourself from the mouse. If you can find the SCS1m... I'm falling in love with it. I just need to get the unencrypted Bomes file. |

Breana Singerman 19.01.2011 | Then when that time comes he can go to Traktor, or even combine them together. Just seems like he's trying to fit a round peg in a square hole |

Valeria Bringle 19.01.2011 | Thanks guys, i will give decadance a try : ) My setup is basically a launchpad and a Nanokontrol. It is nice but i believe my ableton config is really limited compared to someone with Traktor... My aim is to use it as a real DJ, not to create things live. , I use my launchpad as an effect controller on mode User 2( with some effextrix cfg, looper, and beat repeat on it).. and my nanokontrol controls the volume controls, and some more effects. I launch the clips with my scene 1 mode on my launchpad.. but i really feel i miss something. That's why i was asking for help , i will try decadance |
Breana Singerman 18.01.2011 | Depends on how you want to use Ableton to be honest. Are you looking to just mix track "A" to track "B" and so on? What are the key thing you need to have control over? I myself do more "Micro" mixing, instead of mixing tracks, I'm mixing parts so at anyone one time I can have up to 12 channels running at once. Plus I have two keyboards on stage with me along with two launchpads and two BCR/BCF2000's and I'm looking to add a drum pad of some sort in the near future (first obvious choice is the Maschine, but after seeing the new Tempest in action I might scoop that up instead). |
Xavier Emanuels 18.01.2011 | Ableton gets incredibly incredibly personal, the way i find myself using it is to get an idea of how i want to mix then make that a relatity through m4l. This is opposed to working out how the software works then following the workflow that the creators nudge you towards. |

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/user/MichaelOHaganMusic#p/u/16/BfH4RRLhW8M"]YouTube - MichaelOHaganMusic's Channel[/ame] the best solution for me was to just add a DJ'ing environment into ableton, I keep all my production loops in live and then just mix in songs with decadance, its like the S4 on lots of steroids. |

Gilma Marchini 17.01.2011 | I've been playing around with it... My favorite is a Launchpad for clips and a xone 2D for FX/volume, although a NanoKontrol2 (just came out (http://www.korg.com/product.aspx?pd=596#feat)) and a launchpad would probably be the best setup. Even better is a Launchpad and a Zero SL mkII. The APC40 is also boss, but I don't like the size nor the fact you need a power adapter (just doesn't fit well if your aiming for a club). VST wise the Komplete 7 has everything I need, and anything it doesn't have is covered in the Reaktor User Library. |
Valeria Bringle 17.01.2011 | First, thanks to answer to this. my controllers are a Korg Nanokontroller and a launchpad. I currently use the MYR script for the nano, and a personal one for the launchpad. I have trouble to find a proper way to add a loop button, or even to replace the cue points :/ |
Random X 17.01.2011 | I believe there's plenty cool DJ setups, just use the search button and you will be welcomed to a world of BCR2000/UC33e/APC40/APC20/APC80/Xone:Xd/Launchpad controllers. I know there are some people that even run these through a traditional mixer, but just believe, and know, what you want your set up to be. |
Kandy Ahdoot 17.01.2011 | you will find the best help here http://www.abletonlivedj.com/community / |
Ling Zambada 17.01.2011 | What controller are you using? It's pretty easy to setup Ableton so you get all the same functionality of a conventional DJing application (Traktor, Serato, Torq, etc.) |
