Video: Traktor Pro 2 Sample Decks with Maschine
Posted on: 07.03.2011 by Mammie Ninke
Here's a video showing my midi mapping for Native Instruments' New Traktor Pro 2 software, using Maschine as a midi controller.

I show that when you drag a loop from a track deck to a sample deck three things happen: The loop is loaded, it starts playing, and it is muted. So I created three modifiers, one for each of those functions. I also added a "Load from List" modifier so you can load samples straight to the decks from the browser and a "Clear Sample Deck" modifier so you can erase/reset your sample decks. I have dedicated Volume and Filter knobs for each sample deck as well as Filter kills.

I added functions for re-triggering each sample deck as well as syncing each sample deck if they are not playing on beat after re-triggering.

I plan to add a group sync button so with one button you can sync all four slots at once.

I have added links to the tsi. and ncc. files

I use select, solo, and mute as Load, play, and mute for my sample decks because that's what automatically happens when you drag a loop from a track deck to a sample deck. I like them in toggle mode because I can use them individually, like just leaving mute selected to mute sample decks or just leaving play selected where the top 8 pads play/stop decks and the bottom 8 retrigger decks. Then with the play mod still selected I change pad pages and have all 16 play/stop and on another page all 16 retriggers. I like to use the sample decks to make original beats and loops so not having to hold down a modifier helps me in that way.. Great minds believe alike!

I see what you mean. I've tried that and gotten the led to jump back to 0 when you reset the filter by adding a midi out to the knob but at about + and - 10-20% I get a flutter that I don't get when the midi out isn't present.
Your way is smart, too, I just chose the less of two evils. lol.

I just implemented it like that myself. i like it, i was considering making note repeat a modifier to make the filter knobs volume but decided im going to see if volume is even necessary with dedicated filters and mute and stop/start, i've got everything mapped for sample decks on one knob page and one pad group only right now and above everything i dont like to spread functionality across multiple pages and like to save the global non paged controls for global functions and modifiers. less button presses = faster workflow, thats why i set all my modifiers to hold instead of toggle for the sample decks and used the bottom two rows of the pad group for the modifiers(my strip of buttons next to the pads are for navigating trees/lists for tracks and also to control the midi clock out start and resync.

I'm creating a Similar Mapping for Maschine, regarding the way you did filters, have you considered mapping the filter on to the same knob as the filter in macro form as to turn it directly on when you first engage it and then use the button above to set the filter to the middle? you said in the video you had a hard time getting it in the center so i figured this might be a improvement for your mapping, its how im going to do mine. also i was wondeirng why you chose to make your modifier buttons lock instead of be momentary, i chose momentary cuz it just seemed to me to be more natural but everyone works different and i'd be interested to hear your reason.

i have sample play and slot start/stop mapped to each of the slots conditionally. if the slot is empty i test for that in a condition and sample play which is a built in macro kinda that mimics the drag to slot from focused deck is used, if the slot contains a sample it just defaults to slot start/stop behavior. this is only for a nonset m4 value as i use m4 modifiers in hold to do all the things such as load from deck, load from list, mute/unmute toggle, mode, etc.

i also havn't run into any phase sync problems yet, can you give me some conditions i can use to recreate a phase sync problem without disabling snap and quant which i always have on unless beatgridding a difficult track. if there is a need for this i would say map the sync so its macro'd with play / trigger. i try to stack buttons as much as possible, then use modifiers to change the values for the commands the button triggers, beatjump for instance i had a beatjump forward and backward 16 bars but several other buttons that if held down would change to half a bar, 1 bar for glitching and 32 and 64 bars for skipping thru a song.

i noticed in traktor 2 that the midi paramater load from deck doesnt seem to work with deck focus it wants a direct value, so i have my load from deck button which is just a modifier that sets m4 =1 while held and then on the sample slot button i assign the real load from deck parameter to the sample slot and test conditions for m4=1 and m2=1 and set to deck a(m2 is from my highly complex deck focus toggle/modifier tracking/takeover group with accurate midi feedback i made), then dup'd to same button and changed m2=2 to deck b. kinda a pain in the ass, im guessing its a t2 bug to not have focus as an option for a button mapped to "sample decks > load from deck" esp when the description in chapter 20 of the manual specifically states "loads a sample from the deck in focus." anyone else notice this?

i'll post my mapping when its all done too. these things tend to be complex with the multiple modifiers and macros. also considering my mapping its more than just sample decks its going to be everything everything.

you open the ncc file when you have the controller editor open and you open the tsi file from the preferences menu in traktor. go down to where it says import and navigate to where you saved that tsi file to.

Hope that helps!

Hey dj divine, came across this mapping while searching high and low and you have hit it spot on, thanx..i also encounter the problm with you ncc file... i cannot open it in control editor.. when i try sppend it to controll ditor it dont find the file and if i open it directly it opens control editor... im o wndows 7 so not sure if that is an issue.. any help would be appreciated . as i believe its the best mapping i have found out there.. hope you understand how i explianed it all... once again thanx for the efort you put in to creating and sharing this mapping..

ive never had good results come from mapping the output of any of the encoders to themselves, its very unpredictable, i believe its a slight latency involved and then it creates an infinite loop back onto itself.
