Using RMX soundcard in Ableton
Posted on: 09.06.2011 by Raven Sidelinger
So, It doesn't seem that Ableton live recognizes my Hercules RMX Midi Controller. I can use it with traktor pretty well, and even get the master output through the headphone jack.

I have a built in sound card on my desktop, but I'm not sure if I want to use this with my studio headphones. Also, I can clearly tell that the RMX output sound is better. Should I be worried about exporting Ableton songs through the RMX? I don't have an amp at the moment, so I'm stuck using k240's.

Any ideas? Thanks

Well, it has 2 separate headphone jacks, 2 outputs, 2 inputs, and a mic input. I'm believeing of just getting speaker cable and stripping the outputs. Then connecting the loose wires to two floor speakers. I can't afford an amp at the moment.

It only takes 2 mins to set it up.

you wont be able to Cue (if you need to) unless your integrated sound card has 4 outputs.

The Herc Soundcard is most certainly better than the integrated one if your speakers are decent you'll notice and latency will most likely be less with the herc as well.

Is even it worth setting it up? I'm looking to get an amp soon and just use speakers, but I want the best quality output for production purposes. Will I see a noticeable difference in the quality if I don't use the RMX soundcard. My internal soundcard is integrated.

You mean cueing between Cue / Master on the rotary i'm guessing for headphones mixing ?

Yes its less intuitive, you need to set up an Ext audio effects rack on the master output with a send to the headphones channel.

Then set up the rotary as an Inverse between headphone Volume and macro on the ext audio fx rack, it'll take some playing to get the ideal mix levels.. and there prob will be a big dip in the middle.

You can do a split between Master / monitor mix OR, the way I have mine set up is that I have

Cue only - all the way left
Master + Cue = all the way right
Master only = no cues selected

You do lose the headphone volume, but you already have that on the herc, so just set it in Ableton to around 0db and should be good.

Pain in the ass this isn't a standard feature, just plain makes sence.

The only real gripe I have with using Ableton is ATM when using it for DJ purposes everything seems to be a "workaround", hope they change some of the basics for more DJ friendly use in live9

I'm trying to listen through the RMX headphone mixer though. It works in Traktor, but ableton seems to be less intuitive.

Ain't no reason why you can't use the Rmx with Ableton. The configuration is pretty similar to Traktor:

a) be sure that the Rmx is set to ASIO in the control panel before launching Live

b) in Live audio Setup:

Driver Type : ASIO

Audio Device: Hercules DJ Console Rmx ASIO

Channel configuration: click OUTPUT CONFIG sure to enable all outputs

c) in Live MIDI Setup:

- You should be able to select the Rmx for both Input and Output.

- You should also enable them for TRACK and REMOTE

Now, keep in mind that Live MIDI configuration is not as advanced as Traktor, so some configuration may be limited or not be possible.

In order to get a little more flexibility, you may also need to install the Hercules MIDI Mapper:
