Ableton APC40 template - attached.
Posted on: 04.05.2011 by Rolanda Clodfelder
Decided I'd post up my APC40 Ableton template, might be a starting point for someone

1-4 = Main decks
5-8 = FX / Sample Decks
8 "One Knob" FX on each channel.
Gain / Bass visible on all channels.
Independent Volume all channels.
Scene stop/play disabled.
Stop all clips disabled.

EQ's are set on 4 return tracks so channels 1/5 are effected by the same return channel, this is ideal if you use the 5-8 as Sample / FX as levels remain exactly the same.

Gain is -15db / +3db
EQ's do NOT kill, I have them set to about -20db to +10dbs around
Master output has Compressor / Limiter / Dynamics.
Each channel is set to -3db's

To get the quantizing working I needed to use "Midistroke" and set the grid to use either cmd+9 for channel 5-8 or cmd+0 for channels 1-4

Credit to M-lovers for some of the rack effects.

Oh and my reasoning for disabling the stop all/rec/play is I kept hitting them by accident = NOT GOOD !

MidiStroke not Keystroke, Its a Mac Application http://www.charlie-roberts.com/midiStroke/

One of my previous post images shows how I have mine setup - on Mac Also.

You'll need midi monitor also to find your particular APC key values as they do not all APC's have the same values.

Same as assigning anything in midistroke .. find the number, assign the key :-S ....I take it you did this already with the other keys ?

You'll need midi monitor to find the num/channel of anything you want to assign.

Nope you'll need to do it in midistroke ..

I just reassigned the top and bottom scene launch buttons to two blank rack knobs on the master channel and 83/ch1 86/ch1 to "+" and "-" in midistroke.

Your # might be different as it depends on the APC, there's three variations of cc's

is there anyway to add some navigation funcionts? i mean browser and clip zoom in out funtions?
I just assigned + - in midi stroke to my top and bottom scene launch keys for zoom, as they were pretty much not doing alot since the change to playing clip

Regards the browser I cant see any way of improving things unless you are using bomes and a few other things .. i'd probably use the bank select perhaps for browser function.

Can just "hope" Ableton have been listening in relation to peoples cries for assignable clip browsing and loading (amongst other things).

http://community .ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=56470

Check the link for mouseless browsing if you want to try it.

Love to hear some feedback on the template as it stands and any improvements.

Attached is the latest version with a whole heap of revisions since I first posted including Monitor / Master Mix.

Midi stroke is mainly used for just my quantize settings as I flip between nudge and play mode alot things start going outta sync otherwise the way I have it set up is below .. I'd post my prefs but I know for a fact my CC's are quite unique in the APC world.

APC Settings
As before channels:

1-4 = Play tracks
5-8 = Record / Sample tracks

I've ditched all the record/arm buttons from being controlled with the APC

Stop = Loop In selected track
Rec = Loop Out selected track
Play = Loop Off selected track
Track Selection = Actual Playing Track (as opposed to channel selection only)
Clip Stop = FX on/off
REC/ARM = Clip Stop
Cue / Solo = CUE
Cue Level = Headphone Master / Cue Mix (for in headphone cue/mix).
Track Control Pan Selected = BASS/GAIN
Track Control Send A Selected = Mid Top

Faders 1/5 2/6 3/7 4/8 are linked to faders 1-4

Faders 5-8 are still able to be independently controlled... my reasoning for this is simple... 5-8 are FX / sample decks which will in all likelyhood be the same level normally as 1-4 if Its being used for FX. if being used for loops they have independent control. Its just one less fader to have to level out.

MidiStroke settings

sorry I cant post the midikey settings but you can get an idea of what I'm using them for and its easy enough to set up once you know the CC values.

Scene Launch 1/5 are scroll up/down the Grid

Scene Launch 2-4 are Quantize 1, 1/4, 1/8
Loop is set to Quantize 1 Bar
Nudge is set to No Quantize
All grid keys are mapped to 1 Bar & Follow mode.

Hope it might give someone a starting point.

Just a heads up - there is no headphone cue volume mapped, I generally keep things at the same level and figured the split was worth more to me than a volume.

You can change the master on headphone level using the split cue rack in the master if you need to.

Next on the list is some funky one button FX

Might give this a go at some point. How did you implement the loop in/out? Did you just use midistroke for it?
