Twitch, Launchpad & Traktor (together)
Posted on: 26.01.2012 by MadMan Ajms
Anyone know if Novation Twitch and a Launchpad can be used together with Traktor Pro? I believe it could be a cool setup, but maybe too usb intensive..??
Anyone know anything or any mappings already?

Cheers

How does the visual feedback work on the LP?
I mean I want to see volumes and fx..

Cheers and thanks for your help and time.
no videos. it runs on windows/osx/linux but i haven't officially released the osx or linux ports yet - will do probably over the weekend.

u can have whatever visual feedback u want. for volumes you'd use a column of pads on the launchpad to act as a virtual volume fader and have it double up as a vu-meter. the default launchpad config has 4 pages selected via session/u1/u2/mixer and on the mixer one it has virtual volume and eq faders + kill switches. there's a toggle button to enable/disable the vu-meter feedback. handy to have it disabled if no audio going to that channel else u don't know where you have set the level to ofc.

u create/change configs by editing a file, u don't ever (ish) have to edit the tsi within traktor.

the default launchpad config has a virtual 4banks midi fighter on page 1 and 2 twitch style 4banks areas on the bottom 3 rows and transport controls at the top. i haven't finished the full config yet, will create a thread with pics etc when i do.

nope - for that u need middleware software like my midimasher - but the slicer isn't perfect.

u mean midimasher as u mention lua? then neither... midimasher runs and sits between traktor (or any other app(s)) and your launchpad doing the needed translation.

i just showed u those urls as they tell u the midi that the launchpad sends and receives. you don't need the lua itself if you're just going to connect traktor and launchpad directly, useful for knowing what "outs" to add tho - esp the colors for leds

you can just use "learn" to set the inputs in traktor - and you'll see the values correspond to my lua.

tho if u wanted to use midimasher for multiple pages, more advanced led feedback and "twitch" style slicer all builtin - i'll hopefully be releasing a big update today that reduces latency and feels much more responsive.

yup - just standard midi. each button sends a midi message out when pressed and u send the same one back to light up the led - with different velocities depending on what color u want. most send/recv notes - a few (the top ones) use CC's - all standard midi tho.

this is the full midi map: http://midimasher.djism.com/lua/devices/launchpad.lua and this is the color values http://midimasher.djism.com/lua/lib/launchpad.lua

it has some methods for bulk led updates and double buffering so that leds appear to get updated at the same time - but it's still just midi - and not needed unless u want to do something a bit different. midimasher uses those for page switching.

it's quite a simple controller to map natively in traktor.

edit: the novation nocturn *doesn't* use midi - not natively anyway - you can only talk midi to it via automap. the launchpad can be used with or without automap - i never use it personally.

no reason why it wouldn't work well. the only problem with the launchpad is it being a bit slow at updating leds - but that's not an issue in tp2 now it uses mutliple threads - tp1 would glitch the audio a bit when doing big updates.

i usually plug various combinations of multiple controllers in when using traktor and haven't (yet) had any issues with using so many usb devices.

As long as you map them in different controller pages and assing the in/outs accordingly, you shouldn't have any kind of issues with overlaps or conflicting midi channels.
