Possible CDJ's?

Possible CDJ's?
Posted on: 17.10.2011 by Celina Crusey
I'm currently using a denon MC-6000 and a midi fighter to mix, but I'd love to own a pair of CDJ's (using my denon as the mixer) for mixing without my laptop. Anyone have a suggestion for a good pair of CDJ's? I know most people will say "pioneer" right away but those are MAD expensive unless you find a good deal on a used pair. Any specific models I should keep an eye out for?

NOTE: I would like a pair of CDJ's that have a USB input because i really don't feel like burning massive amounts of CD's

If I manage to find the mixer-like controller I'm looking for and get Traktor's master meter to output to LEDs the way I want it to

Agreed. It and the 2000 are the only ones that feel "right" to me. But, I'm weird about that. Everything I own is either really cheap or really nice

Found this, just can not figure out why quantize doesnt work with 850.. it's all in the software?! gay if pioneer removed it just because there should be a reason to buy the 900..

Yes, that's exactly what you can do my friend! (save hotcues, waveforms on the sd cards).
Quantization is an option only on their higher end models, and it is missing the Link function so you can't prepare and then subsequently feed the tracks into the players like you can with the 900/2000's. Their explanation was 'product differentiation'. Which means they want you to spend more money.

What features can you not use with the cdj 850 in recordbox?

how about the djtech usolo-e? I've been considering it. Dirt cheap, i can beatmatch, scratch a little, loop a little, fx a little, and work off usb. its probably midi compliant as well. Any opinions? I know you all have a prejudice against sketchy brands, but its an utterly basic piece of kit, and got a good scratchworx review...so i mean.. maybe?

I believe its important to get a cdj with modern usb function.

Quantize is somthing subtle if you ask me.

Its funny, because for some reason I had this idea that made me feel pressure to not be using snap and quantize inside of traktor but now on the CDJs is an apparent reason to raise the price of a product.

Also,

I have cdj 800mkII and i dont find a problem using manual loop, auto loop sucks.

I believe alot of the "bad timing" problems comes from the person reaction time and distance their fingers are from their buttons on the player.

Yes I do have to adjust the phrase every 5-10 seconds and can't tweet while i'm in mid loop, but its definitely doable.

Can't you save hot cues on an SD card with the 1000 mk3 though?

Yes, you can save alot. But the downside is the limitation of only 3 cues PER CD..
So if you want 3 cues in a song, then you have to burn cds with 1 song each..

is it true you can save a massive amount of hot cues on the 1000 mk3 if you have an SD card?

im torn in between 850 and 1000. Because used, you will find them way cheaper.
If the 850's and 1000's go for the same price and you don't already have a sweet cd library - definately 850. Hot cues was for me kind of a dissapointment on cdj 1000mk3 since you can ONLY have 3 cues PER CD..

Cdj 900 is not found so often used but if you could get a grip of those at a good price i suggest you do.(good price is like maximum 200 Euro more each player).

If you guys could help me make a decision between any of these models (used) I'd love the input:

CDJ 850
CDJ 1000 mk3
CDJ 900

I would get CDJs dude if your planning on getting CD players. They are still club standard. Learning these will prepare you nice for bigger and better gigs. If not CDJs then just get a controller setup.

So right now, I have a few CDJ models in mind as I've done some more research:

Used CDJ 850
stanton cmp 800
reloop RMP3
american audio radius 7000

orrrrr wait until the gemini CDJ 700 comes out(which has a full touch screen?!)

What are your thoughts everyone?

Why do you say that? The digital system doesn't work nearly as well as it should. A list of complaints that I have about my MC6000 with traktor are: hiccups when turning filter on, not being able to accurately backspin, constant buzzing noise coming out of PA system when plugged in, EQ's are not real kills (maybe 90%), and there are too many bells and whistles to get distracted with.

I get far too absorbed in FX manipulation, and staring at the phase meter/waveform when I should be training my ear to listen for key, beatmatch, and create dramatic build-ups/breakdowns by fiddling with minimal FX and EQ adjustment. I feel that if I had 2 good CDJ's and a high quality mixer, i'd get so less distracted, which would force myself to actually learn the basics of DJ'ing. If you started on a digital system, I believe once you start using cdj's that you will get bored with them pretty fast. But you gotta do what you gotta doo. Im believeing about getting some technic 1210's just for the nostalgia effect haha

Ive used CDJ100's, 200's, 400's, 800's, 900's, 1000mk2&3's, 2000's (and some weird denon ones) and out of what ive used the 2000's were the best, followed by the 1000's then the 400's. Make of that what you will

They are also missing quantization, and for a lot of people link feature is a pretty big one to be without. I also understand that the units couldn't keep loops in time to save their lives, but I believe that was remedied with a FW update. Having to only prepare one drive, or feed songs from your laptop to the players with all of the pre prepared hot cues and loops is EXTREMELY convenient, as not everyone would want to use them as HID controllers for software. And why no SP/DIF out?

Drat. Oh well.
Yeah, the problem I had was trying to get the cue button to work. Trying to Cue up the start of a track was a pain because it didn't want to seem to work the same way the CDJ's that I am familiar with or my pair of Stanton C.324.
