FX Units

FX Units
Posted on: 18.02.2012 by Carlotta Fabick
Hey guys,

I've got a Xone 92 and CDJ 900s and I've been looking for an effects unit to add to my set up without having to add a laptop + traktor. I found the Pioneer EFX-1000 but I'm not a fan of how Pioneer's effects sound. I prefer the effects to sound more subtle, like in the Xone DB2/4. Is there anything else other the the EFX-500/1000 that could be used as an effects unit? Haven't had luck finding anything. Would be nice if Allen & Heath would make something like a revised Xone 2D that used their iLive studio effects just like their new mixers....

Thanks

Except I prefer a plain analog mixer, versus a digital mixer that's had gummy bears vomitted all over it.

Yah dude. Had seen it on DJF. Very classy.

I actually bought the Empath as well, for a bit of variety (no satisfaction mixing droning techno, hip-hop or drum'n'bass on a rotary).

Once I move I might start a setup thread. In the meantime:

But for the fact that it's only got a single input - I'm looking for independant control on each channel (and no, FlexFX won't achieve what I'm after) - and I'd be paying for junk I wouldn't use (all my sound work is done in-the-box).

Cheers for the suggestion, though.

I have a viewsonic viewpad, never run ableton off it but vst's work fine through vdj so it shouldnt be too much of an issue. you could also try to find a smaller 7 inch netbook close the lid and hide it, but not sure that would handle a lot of vst's or if 1.66ghz 2gb ram ones exist.
After buying Denon DN-X1100 I got this, what seems to be solid fx loop, and would like to put it in use if possible but without buying some expensive external fx unit.

Is there a way for me to use some software effect into mixer, if so woudl I need another laptop or I can use same one I use for serato ?

Also what else I need, another sound card I suppose to feed it into fx loop ?

The EXF1000 is definitely the best unless your gonna go the ableton/traktor route.
Had a KP1(?) hated it, had a EFX 1000 and loved it!!!!!! Easy, to use, great sounds... sold it  for 1 3rd Technic 1200 and to help on the Rane Rotary

I believe the quad is your best bet though. There's some decent youtube videos of it working.

Ya, netbooks like that are still being made. I'll check it out at work in the next few days and see if I can get them to handle vsts

Don't know if I could justify spending that much on an effects unit that's so old. You'd believe that the price would've dropped after being on the market since '05

Well it certainly looks good, and it must certainly sounds good, but this is a "500" modular serie type of processor, that means you would have to buy much more than just one of these to get it to work, you need a power section and usually a case for it. For the price of two of these plus the case/power supply you could buy a xone db4

A&H made a filter unit:

I don't know if they still sell it, and it's expensive. But it seems like the world kind of ignored effects like that. Kaoss pads and the EFX-1000 are about the limit at this point, AFAIK.

When Electrix were still around, they made some rack stuff that was supposed to be pretty good. And there are studio-oriented reverb and delay units. Plus, some guitar effects come in stereo packages

I've been believeing about this as well, I'd love to have a couple of analog filters in a box beside my mixer.

I've tried pretty much all effects units, from vintage stuff like a Space Echo and an Eventide Harmonizer to all the newest stuff, including a dedicated laptop running Ableton.

In my opinion the EFX-1000 is hands-down the best live effects processor ever made. But, like you, I don't want the effects to stand out.
