Just got my s4, the buttons on the left dont work. Ideas?
Posted on: 04.02.2011 by Alyce Staudacher
So I finally got an s4. I got home and set it up and the buttons below the left jog wheel dont work, although they light up correctly. For example if I ha=it the deck a play button on the s4, nothing happens, but if I click play in the softeware, the button on the controller will light up. The light in traktor that indicates receiving a signal does not light up when these buttons are pressed.

The buttons on the right side of the controller work fine.

One thing I noticed is that the buttons on the left that do not work feel different then the ones on the right. The non functioning ones click loudly when pressed and they feel less firm when pressed(can't believe of a better way of describing it). The buttons on the right barley make a sound when pressed and feel much more firm when pressed.

I called NI support and was put on hold for a long time and then directed towards a long list of things to try online. the man tried to hang up on me before I looked at the list of ideas. I had to argue with him to get him to stay on the line for one minute while i looked over the list. The things he wanted me to try would have taken a long time and were completely absurd (they were to help with latency problems) after arguing with the guy some more he admitted that nothing on the list was relevant to my problem but if i wanted it replaced it would take 3 weeks.

Any one know if there is any way to fix this or if my unit is definetly defective?

The key word on the NI site and on the S4 literature is 'OPTIONAL'.
Im not defending NI, im simply stating that their was no false advertising.

I know a lot of people 'assumed' free update but they did not want to believe 'paid' upgrade.
I believe people read what they wanted to read into it.

It was never even hinted that it would be free.

Unfortunatley so many people make so many false claims "ive heard this and that" that the truth gets lost .

NI will never give the DVS plugin away free. There is a license to pay on every copy that goes to N2IT the people that own the DVS licence.

All buttons work fine on my S4 (except for one FX assign button), but I noticed the same inconsistency in how they "feel". For example, some buttons in the same cue point row will click while others will press softly, so it's definitely not unique to your S4. Since both clicking and non-clicking buttons work fine on my unit, I don't believe the difference in how they feel has anything to do with the problem. I would double-check all the obvious things like for example that the focus is on the correct deck and if it's still not working then just return or replace the faulty unit as soon as you can.

All of this misunderstanding could have easily been avoided if instead of saying

"...external timecode control will be enabled in TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 through a software upgrade in the near future"

NI would just say something like

"external timecode control will be enabled in TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 through a paid software upgrade in the near future."

I'm not going to call "false advertising" on them as I'm sure their legal guys made sure that's not going to be the case, but I have a strong feeling this was done on purpose to boost sales of S4. I work for a software company myself and I'm very well aware of how this type of marketing BS is pushed on to the end-user via FAQs, whitepapers, User's Guides, etc. And yes, I understand the difference between an "update" and "upgrade"

To me when someone says upgrade it implies a purchase, when they say update it implies free. Everything I read about time code support and the S4 said upgrade.

I understand your frustration about the timecode, but as you said, you feel they implied the time code support was a future free update. NI never said that, but they should have been more specific. I thought the same thing when I first read that the S4 would have time code support. After I thought about it though, I realized time code was a different more costly version of TPro in the past, so most likely it would stay that way.
And it may not make you feel any better, but with the S4 you got a HID(NHL) controller, sound card, and the latest software for only $900. I still believe it's a good value for your money even with out the time code.

Yea, I still can't believe how awful the customer support was. It would have been a evening mare to have to go through with NI replacing it.

I'm having a few problems still but they are all with the software I believe.

I'm also pretty angry that its going to cost $140 to get time code support. I feel that NI implied in the faq on their website and on the s4 packaging that time code support was a feature of the s4 that still needed some work and would be enabled when ready, and I know a lot of others thought this too.

Good thing you bought local! I did the same just in case, but haven't had problems.

So I went back to guitar center, the one closest to me was out of s4's but they said they would get one in within a few days for me. I decided to drive to another guitar center with an s4 in stock. They tested mine and replaced it.

When the guy at the 2nd gc tried to test my first s4, the lights on it flashed on, faded out, and then it didnt work at all.
