Weird s4/pro2 problem
Weird s4/pro2 problem Posted on: 18.08.2011 by Kristofer Krauel Past couple of times I've used my s4 I've had to change the tempo clock to master as if it's set to auto my tracks will randomly slow down to like 112bpm or something else absurdly low. Anyone else experienced this and is it something completely simple that I'm missing?Cheers | |
Kristofer Krauel 05.09.2011 | Been told I don't need my proof of warranty as every s4 comes with 24 months warranty as standard (?). Just sent it to Germany today. Cost me |

Random X 14.09.2011 | True, though a new S4 would have been great too. |
Kristofer Krauel 14.09.2011 | Bet you breathed a small sigh of relief!! Im chuffed to be getting mine back. These things have a tendency to drag on so to turn this around in 2 weeks is amazing. Its been horrible not having it for 2 weeks. |
Random X 14.09.2011 | Excellent mate. Just had a chat with my mate. It seems that my problem was no problem with the S4 after all. It was with my old BCR+MIDIfight combo. Guess it could be just the software after all. |
Kristofer Krauel 14.09.2011 | Just had a reply from NI. They can't recreate my issue during their testing but because of the information i have provided they are going to send me a new device!! Think this is excellent customer service. I've had problems with my iPhone in the past and all apple kept doing when they couldn't recreate a problem was send me back the original device - which was highly frustrating when as soon as i got it back my original issue instantly reoccurred!! Thought id write this because there are a few threads discussing NI's poor customer service, when all i have is great things to say about them. |

Rey Holubar 01.09.2011 | Glad at least you are going forward with the issue. Let us know, what happens, if you get it returned and back again. scamo |
Kristofer Krauel 31.08.2011 | Ok quick update. NI have said that this is a hardware issue and are arranging for a return. Ive hit a slight snag in that i can't find my original invoice to prove purchase and warranty!!! aarrrgghhhh!!! There are also a couple of people on this community that have had similar problems and had to return their s4. I must say that it doesn't seem that NI are overly quick at fixing this problem as I've read stories of taking over 4 weeks to return the s4 in full working order!! fingers crossed i don't run into any issues. |
Random X 28.08.2011 | Nice! Hope they'll find out what's wrong. |
Kristofer Krauel 27.08.2011 | Several emails back and forth with NI support and it seems this may actually be a hardware issue. My case has been passed to the hardware team so I'm just waiting for a response now. Btw the guys at NI support have been brilliant. Very quick with their response everytime. |
Len Lukawski 22.08.2011 | Only other dumb though I had was default S4 mapping and using a tsi to see if u get the same result.... |
Kristofer Krauel 22.08.2011 | wow lots to believe about there. Thanks man. im gonna start by connecting my s4 to a mates laptop and also connect his s4 to my laptop and see what happens. Will check all the other things you mention too. Gonna have a good dig around tomorrow evening . Only "silly" thing ive done with the S4 recently was take it to Ibiza. I bought a protective sleeve before i went but that turned out to be an EXTREMELY tight fit so i wonder whether ive damaged the fader in some way. Not gonna know until i try my S4 on my mates system but its a possibility i suppose. Other than that though it was highly protected during transit. |
Len Lukawski 22.08.2011 | I don't know that what you are seeing is definitely a hardware issue. It could be that the S4 is ok but what it's sending isn't being picked up correctly by traktor. That could be down to drivers, cable change, something you installed on your machine. Do you have access to another machine you can test on? Testing traktor without the S4 versus traktor with the S4 isn't an apple-to-apples comparison in my book as there are drivers and cables etc that are in play with the S4 that obviously aren't when it's not connected. Have you changed your usb cable, added a hub or made any other changes that might affect how the S4 communicates with Traktor? Have you checked your windows event log to see if any errors are being reported? have you installed updates to your system (sound, gfx, mb etc). Have you installed any news apps? Just some thoughts as I sit in the doctors waiting room. Also, did you anything silly to/with the s4 itself? |
Kristofer Krauel 22.08.2011 | ok i deleted all mappings and imported thee default s4 mapping. All went well for half an hour then same thing happened again. Also recalibrated the faders but no joy. Ive realised now that it only actually happens on deck B. another thing ive noticed is that when i load Traktor with the S4 connected the tempo fader on deck B shows as being all the way to the top of the range like this: f9kY7GJt.jpg even though the fader on the S4 is in the centre position. However when i start Traktor without the S4 connected the fader in the software remains in the centre position. This must mean its a hardware problem surely?! |
Kristofer Krauel 22.08.2011 | It's funny you say that cos I've recently started using my midi-fighter again. Plus even though I've gone through a fresh install I'm still using the same mapping so i'll import a fresh s4 default mapping without my midi-fighter and see how that works out. Never occurred to me that it may be a mapping issue so thanks for that. |
Len Lukawski 21.08.2011 | Do you have any other midi devices hooked up and are any of them set to ALL PORTS for the Out-Port? I was doing some stuff with the midifighter the other evening and was noticing some very odd behavior. My MF Out-port was set to all ports. When I changed that back to MF the behavior stopped.... Other than that, has your mapping for the S4 gotten fudged up somehow? I am probably totally off the mark but it will only take a few seconds to check. |
Kristofer Krauel 21.08.2011 | Did you completely uninstall? |
Jacquelyn Swiatkowski 21.08.2011 | I've had a similar thing happen but when I reset my traktor via the wizard setup it seemed to go back to normal |
Kristofer Krauel 21.08.2011 | Ok so I uninstalled Traktor, downloaded the pro2 demo and activated with my product key. Less than 30 seconds into my first track and the bpm drops MASSIVELY!! 127 down to 112. Trying to get my head around whether this is software or hardware driven. Could this potential be caused by the s4 or would you say it's a Traktor problem? Either way I've logged a ticket with NI support. It's totally knocked my confidence in my gear. I just don't trust it!! |
Kristofer Krauel 20.08.2011 | Weird. Happened again this morning. Had a 10 minute fiddle and within the first minute and a half it jumped from 127 to 125.13!! My OCD hates unrounded bpm's!! Def gonna give it a fresh install. |
Random X 20.08.2011 | Nope, it's just this one occasion that I can believe of when it happened. Only thing I can believe of, is the current version of TP2 I'm running, as I haven't had that happen to me with the older versions. |
Kristofer Krauel 19.08.2011 | and you never figured out why it happened? hmmmm the plot thickens!! |
Random X 19.08.2011 | Really didn't understand what was going on. We just upped it to 126 and went on from there. |
Random X 19.08.2011 | I had the same thing during a set a few weeks back. We were punching in around 126 or 128bpm and all of a sudden I was back to 122? |
Kristofer Krauel 19.08.2011 | It definitely happens to beat gridded tracks. and they are all locked if thats what you mean? |
Rey Holubar 20.08.2011 | Is the beat grid of the track it happens in "steady". scamo |
Kristofer Krauel 19.08.2011 | No not yet. Don't wanna hassle them with something unless I'm sure it's not user error. |
Nedra Fresneda 19.08.2011 | Did you file a support ticket? |
Kristofer Krauel 19.08.2011 | yeah i cant get my head round it. ive not really had time to explore the issue fully as its been mid-party so im gonna have a good mess around with it tomorrow daytime and see whats going on. i neeed to tidy up my laptop as well so gonna give it a fresh install and see how i get on. strange that no-one else has experienced this. To be fair its not a huge problem as all of the music i play is generally at a set tempo anyway but its an issue that shouldnt be happening! |
Nedra Fresneda 19.08.2011 | That's odd, never heard of it. Using auto as well |
Kristofer Krauel 19.08.2011 | I believe that's part of the problem. I wouldn't know fully how to recreate what happens. Basically I'll set the master clock to auto so that the master deck changes with each new track. Then randomly part way through a track the tempo will suddenly jump down to say 112bpm. Tempo clock still set to auto. Track then remains at that slower tempo unless I manually change it. From memory this isn't isolated to one specific deck either. Happens on A and B. Only way to resolve is to set tempo clock to master and play at a fixed tempo throughout the set. |
Rey Holubar 19.08.2011 | Sounds pretty strange and it is hard to make a suggestion to help with this description. Can you describe what is happening in a bit more detail? Explain like if you wanted that we reproduce the same thing on our S4s. scamo |
