Beginner S4 Help
Beginner S4 Help Posted on: 19.04.2011 by Monnie Salasar Hi! I'm new to the DJ world and just picked up an S4. I've had it a couple weeks and have been loving it.Today I ran into something strange, my cross-fader no longer seems to working. It's like it's permanently set in the middle position. It was working fine last time. All other controls seem to be working fine. I tried recalibrating, and the software (Traktor Pro 2) said it recalibrated correctly. I displayed the fader in the interface, and the position shown on the screen is correct in relation to the S4's fader. I believe it must be something extremely simple, like I accidently turned it off when playing with the shift key and other buttons, but I don't know how I did it. I have not messed around with remapping the controls or anything like that. I really hope this is something simple and not a hardware problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! | |

Monnie Salasar 23.01.2012 | Thanks Jiggle & SpeshulEd! With your help I figured it out. Relative on the faders and I also downed the Tempo range to 50% which gives you a lot more precision on the fader slider. When I'm close I can click both offset buttons to reset to the original BPM. Thanks on behalf of all the noobs out there ;-) |
Joselyn Supina 23.01.2012 | ...or what they said up there. Sorry, I'm at work and started that post hours ago and then got distracted with work crap. Monday emergencies, ugh! |
Joselyn Supina 23.01.2012 | I believe the fader question had been answered...you can turn the crossfader on and off within traktor...the easiest way I know how to do this, is display the crossfader under the decks layout(? - could just be "decks") option...there you should see a,b,c,d = click/highlight them all to use the crossfader, unclick/unhighlight them all for no crossfader. I never use my crossfader, so I have them unclicked. For the BPM issue, you'll want to switch the tempo fader from absolute to relative (I believe thats right, if not its vice versa). With the default setting, if you have a song that is 128bpm, you can go +/-8 in either direction. So if you have it synced with a song that is 108bpm, when you unsync the song and move the tempo fader, it's going to make the jump from 108bpm to 120bpm. If you set it to relative, you can bring it down slower, but you can still only move it 16bpm. It's hard to explain - play around with it for a bit, it'll make sense after a few moments. Personally, I believe slowing down or speeding up the tempo gradually, when you're trying to cover that much ground, kind of sounds funny. I'll usually let it play at the synced speed and wait for a break or a drop and then hit the two buttons above the tempo fader to make it quickly jump to its proper bpm. The change is still noticeable but not so bad if its between beats. If all else fails drop another beat/track on another deck and blend it all together at once. As for the track playing upon load, there should be an option in the settings to stop it from doing this. I know in Traktor 2.03, there was a "loading" section in the settings, can't remember if its still there on 2.11 and 2.12. |
Kandi Odom 23.01.2012 | yeap that will do the trick!!!!!!! |
Pierre Aliseo 23.01.2012 | Thanks bro ill try it out later when im home |
Jarod Perrodin 23.01.2012 | Try changing the loading preferences in traktor, check reset all deck controls when loading track. I believe thats the one that does it? If not let me know Il look again. Good luck |
Chante Brincefield 23.01.2012 | I hope someone knows the answer to this, it would be great for switching genres Nice one jiggle |
Pierre Aliseo 23.01.2012 | Hijacking the thread for a noobie question as well - If I have both decks set on sync and load a song, the song loads and is playing automatically... should I want this? I believe I might like it better if I could load the deck up stopped, and then have it start playing when I want. Thoughts? |
Jarod Perrodin 23.01.2012 | You could try putting the tempo fader in relative mode, then it will adjust from where it is rather than jumping absolute. I believe that will solve it. Oh and my s2 mapping has micro tempo adjust .01 a turn, you can get spot on bpm now Shameless plug, sorry |
Monnie Salasar 23.01.2012 | Thanks, but maybe I need to rephrase my question. Why does sometimes nudging the Tempo fader jump 20 BPM, where most other times it moves less than 1 BPM? There must be some setting I'm missing... The only time this is happening is in the situation I described. All other times (with or without sync) it is working as I expect it to. Thanks in advance! |
Jaleesa Zheng 23.01.2012 | Once you sync both songs to a BPM. Using the tempo is difficult to find the original BPM of the song. Lets say you have one song at 140 bpm and another at 137.29 bpm, if you hit sync both songs go to 140 bpm. If you try adjusting tempo its Its nearly impossible to get to 137.29 lol. I've tried multiple times on different tracks. If you want to keep the original bpm. Then don't hit sync. Just cue it in when you want that beat to drop. Thats how I've been teaching myself. I also just got a traktor but i have the traktor s2 with traktor pro 2. Less knobs but still awesome controller & fun program been up using it the pass 3 days playing around Enjoy |
Monnie Salasar 22.01.2012 | I've got another simple S4 question. I have two tracks synced, one has a BPM of 127, and the other one is sped up to 127 from 108. After cross fading to the second track, I want to slow it down to it's original BPM. When I slightly nudge the Tempo fader, it shoots from 127 to about 109 instantly. I've had no problems doing this with the Tempo fader when the tracks BPMs are a lot closer, but it seems I can't gradually slow this one down. I've played around with the Offset arrow buttons above the Tempo fader and get the same result. I've messed around with the Transport Preferences but I'm not sure I'm on the right track. Any ideas/tips? Is there some preference I need to set? Thanks, your help is greatly appreciated! |
Monnie Salasar 20.04.2011 | Thanks guys, that did the trick. I guess I did deactivate them while playing around. |
Leeanna Ayla 20.04.2011 | Are the letters on each side of the crossfader lit up? If not do what Anderson said. You can also mouse click the letters to activate the channels. |
Ellie Guritz 19.04.2011 | Ok my english is not the best but i'll try to help you out I had this same issue on beggin Try that SHIFT + FX 1 (on channels A and C) under the gain knob SHIFT + FX 2 (on channels B and D) under the gain knob you need to see the lights turned it on below the channel's Volume Faders light on "<" (channels A/C) light on ">" (channels B/D) Hope that helped you. |
