Need expertise on PA speakers
Need expertise on PA speakers Posted on: 01.03.2012 by Eileen Sailes So after much research. Im deciding to upgrade to a Traktor *Kontrol s2 and purchase some speakers. I plan on getting a berhringer powered 18" sub and a powered 15 inch pa speaker.(1000$ budget) Now what else do i need to make this happen? Does the s2 hook striaght into the speakers, or am i missing a part? If so what else do i need to know or purchase to make this setup work. | |

These cabinets represent an above average value at the entry level price points. They are about $350 each, or $700 for a pair. You will also need to budget for speaker stands, and cables. Figure about $900 "out the door." You might be able to find some decent used gear in your area that will meet your price requirements. The possible choices are too numerous to list. Be careful, check the gear for any physical damage. Listen to each cabinet by itself, and play songs are "moderate" levels. |

Its main use will be for big house parties and pool parties during the summer time. Im believeing of going with a 10 instead of 15 for the speaker and keeping the 18 for the sub. I'll be running it mono for the time being until I purchase another "Top" speaker. |
Chong Prestwich 03.03.2012 | plenty of options for under $1000! http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Bass-Mou...ixer_i2637.htm http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Complete...-Amp_i2642.htm http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/DJ-PA-Sy...ixer_i4475.htm http://www.htfr.com/p/371109/mackie_...ctive_speakers |
Erica Charvet 02.03.2012 | That is certainly a good point. But the if you're looking for a good price-performance ratio, the active gear
definitely gets a price premium. $1000 in active speakers won't get you much other than a mid-grade set of mains with little to no bass response. If the OP is willing to do some research, I would still say passive gear is the way to go. If he's wanting plug and play, then active is, of course, a better choice. |
Ruthanne Heiman 02.03.2012 | i dont believe running a 1000$ passive set-up is a good idea. especially if its for a first time pa owner. it adds a bit more complexity by having to worry about crossovers matching speakers and delays.low end crown all-in-onen amplifiers aren't the best either (upper end stuff is tight). the nice thing with Qsc k series, ev live-x, or jbl prx is the cross overs match the drivers perfectly giving a pretty consistent frequency response. plus most of those have built in compressors/limitors that passive system dont, unless you buy all the rck components or a decent signal processor. i am very biased with peavey stuff its absolute garbage. |
Erica Charvet 03.03.2012 | A $1000 budget is tricky. You may want to go passive. Pick up a decent crown amp with a built in crossover. That way, you can use one channel for your speakers and the other for your subwoofer. Build your own sub for a better price-performance ratio. |
Layne Koop 03.03.2012 | If you have a sub, then a 15" loaded top is a waste of pack space and weight. 8" or 10" tops for house parties, and 10" or 12" tops for larger venues. Need more SPL, add more cabinets. I have ten tops and ten subs....with this modular system I can play venues from about 3000sqft to about 25,000sqft. To run a dedicated sub with tops, a crossover will be needed to limit the frequency range that is used for each type of cabinet. At this point, there is little point to buying anything other than a digital PA manager for the job...there will be a LOT of capability that is unused, but there is little to no reason to buy analog or a dedicated crossover. The Driverack PA, and Behringer DCX 2496 are both good units with long track records for reliable use in mobile DJ environments. With a $1k budget, the B52 Matrix 1000 v2 system is about all that is worth recommending. This system is active, with a crossover and all amplifiers built into the cabinets. For a "top only" solution, a pair of RFC 312A also fit into the budget...just be aware that content below 50-ish Hz will roll off rather dramatically. That said, putting any sub into a room that is smaller than about 30ft square will be less than optimal. Room modes will dominate the secondary response, leading to uneven bass. Small rooms are best treated as "home theater" rather than "pro-audio." |
Ruthanne Heiman 03.03.2012 | you should consider running a mono stack of higher quality speakers. By a nicer 15" two-way powered speaker (QSC or EV) and the matching sub. mono set-ups have alot of advantages and if your crowd is under 150 people or indoors that will be all you need. this way you can uprade over time and still start with a higher quility system. |
Eileen Sailes 02.03.2012 | Throw parties, practice routines with high bass. |
Chong Prestwich 02.03.2012 | what you looking to do? home studio? throw parties? if the speakers you're buying are powered then yeah the s2 will plug straight in. |
