We are currently Hoarding tracks trying to decide how and where to release them. it has come to our attention that there are not enough albums coming out in EDM world more singles and E.P.'s then anything so we set out to create something a little more complex. my current problem is i do not want to send it all to labels and most people discourage me from starting our own label. yet i see acts like krewella self releasing through there own label and then bam one E.P. and theyre all over the country overevening . I am open to paying for marketing as i understand there are companies who's job is to market music but i'm just not sure who to go to or what process should be taken here. i saw another thread similar to this one but wanted to get some more particulars.

People who say that you should not start your own label and do not give you a good point of direction are quiters. And people who quit never win!

Monetization of digital content is something that has become tremendously difficult. It takes a lot of strategizing and careful thought.

Dont be discouraged because somebody told you not to start your own label. Starting your own company is a brilliant idea! Particularly if you live in a state where you can get an LLC license (some very serious benefits here, do your research). You dont have to adhere to any preconceived notions of how you believe a "label" business should be run. You are more than capable of selling your own tracks online. The biggest piece of the puzzle is establishing and maintaining a digital presence. If you were interested in hiring some people to help you move forward, then I have some suggestions.

1. Research, research, research! You are certainly not the only person with this problem. How are other independent artists dealing with it? What ways are they monetizing? You need to learn as much as possible so that you are better able to determine what you are able to do personally and what you need to outsource (in this case - marketing).

2. Branding. Consider hiring an independent designer or a design company. Shop around! Check out portfolios. Dont be fooled into believeing its just "graphic design". There are some seriously talented designers out there that will give you much more than a new logo. They can help you refine your vision and help you develop strategies to adhere to it.

3. Marketing. Yes, there are a lot of business related thing you need to believe about. However, there are millions of people with business knowledge out there dying to sell you a service. You need to learn as much as possible so that you know which areas you need help with. If you consider hiring a consultant than be picky and KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Find somebody local that is supportive of startups.

Is an internship a possibility? Most record labels / event management companies could always use an extra pair of hands. Helping out for a few weeks for free could lead to some seriously valuable insight and experience.
