S4 + two X1s + two F1s = ?
S4 + two X1s + two F1s = ? Posted on: 14.04.2012 by Jeraldine Raterink Currently, I'm using the DJ Tech 101 Series controllers (sad, I know). But I have downloaded the mappings for them so I can use Traktor Pro 2. So far, Traktor is much better than the software that comes with the 101 Series (Deckadance) just about every single manor. Obviously, controllers designed for Deckadance are very limited when using them for Traktor, so I decided to do much searching for a controllers for Traktor.I have found that the S4 would be a very good decision for me, however I've also looked at the X1 and F1 for add-ons. I know the X1 is great for controlling traktors effects (obviously) and that the F1 is great for controlling cues, samples, and one shots (obviously. What I'm wondering is: Should I even buy a X1 if I have an S4? Are there things that the X1 can do that the S4 can't do? Or are there things that can be done BETTER by the X1? If so, would there be a use in buying two X1s? I like my layout to be symmetrical to be honest. Clearly the X1 can do things that the S4 can't do, but again, is there use in buying two of them? OR would it be better for me to buy an S2 with the combination of two X1s and F1s? Some people have simply said to buy two of them because "I can do more with them", but what exactly could I do do more with them if I already had an S4? Any feedback is great, thanks! | |

Ive been Djing for close to 8 years on and off and ive played vinyl cdjs and digital and i seriously believe a s4 x1 and f1 is going to be my setup for a very long time i would highly recommend it. |
Jeraldine Raterink 17.04.2012 | Yep, i've decided that i'm gonna do that. |
Sylvia Greener 17.04.2012 | Nevertheless, one could find S4+X1+F1 combo useful. S4 could do everything it normally does, X1 additionally controls FX 3 and 4 and maybe some more nice stuff and the F1 would control the remix decks. Even though some of you will believe this is overkill, I believe it would be quite nice, would give you nearly all possibilities of Traktor software and would be really comfortable (no shiftings!). As said, try and then buy what you're missing! |

Kandi Odom 16.04.2012 | I believe s4+x1+f1 would be too much (i will have that setup am only missing the f1) why dont you go ahead and try the s4 first its amazing just by itself and then add the f1 for the new remix decks and then if you need and want more try another controller and incorporate it on something like ableton live so you can do something different!!!!!!! |
Jeraldine Raterink 16.04.2012 | I don't mind size really, i like having bigger set ups anyway. I feel like i have more possibilities and it looks better in my opinion. so you all believe i should get an S4 plus an F1 OR an S2 plus an X1 and an F1. But would there be a reason for me to get a S4 and an X1 AND F1? |
Sylvia Greener 16.04.2012 | S4+F1+Turntable= Awesome setup! I will see what I will get out of S4+Maschine+Remix Decks. Chances are high to see some tremendous routines in near future! |
Erich Vallabhaneni 16.04.2012 | I say go S4. To me it just feels like a stronger controller and its not huge but not tiny either. And I agree the S4+F1 will be a damn good setup. (I believe ill add a 1210 to mine for alittle more scratch versatility) |
Kandi Odom 16.04.2012 | The only problem will be that S4+F1 is gonna be huuuuge!!! Almost impossible to use in most clubs but ill definitely have the S4+F1 Combo!!! |
Somer Vanstraten 16.04.2012 | It depends on what you do, like! I prefer s2+x1 because I've dedicated controls over the 2track deck and 2 sample deck. Meanwhile on s4 you have to use the same controls of deck a to control deck c with layouts(in advance mode, if you want only sample play and eq, they are always ready to go!) S2, only track decks, x1, advance control over sample, knob used for single sample volume, filters and eqs, button for play stop and retrigger, and in hotcue mode for activating sample options (like fx enable, key lock, sample mode ...) S4 is great because is all in one. I believe that if you sum s2+x1 controls an compare to s4, you should have 2 more knobs in the s4, but more buttons with s2+x1. (I'm selling my setup for an s4, not because they are not working well, only because I'm not using sample deck too much, and, looking for remix deck, I believe in the future s4+f1 should be my setup ) |
Sylvia Greener 16.04.2012 | Of course it does |
Jeraldine Raterink 15.04.2012 | Oh, damn. GRRRR. I really like the S2 booth out but I really want the other features of the S4. The S4 also just looks better with all the flashy lights and such. |

The S2 is nice and small though, and a lot cheaper, but still seems very basic. |
Jeraldine Raterink 16.04.2012 | Oh, well if that's it then I could probably deal with that. |
Sylvia Greener 15.04.2012 | + Turntables and CDJs can only be connected to the S4. They cannot be used with the S2 as far as I know. |
Jeraldine Raterink 14.04.2012 | So what's the difference between the S4 and S2? Is it only that the S4 has 4 deck control and the S2 doesn't? I'll probably end up buying one of those and then seeing what I need, as you all suggested. |

The bottom half could be the excellent preparation mapping (it was posted on the blog a couple of weeks ago) and you could use it to set up tracks. 2 F1s may be too much as well, as 1 F1 can control both remix decks. And really, with 16 samples/loops to use at a time, 2 F1s would be overkill. TL;DR: see what you can do with the S4, wait for a few weeks after 2.5 is out, and see what you need. |
Geri Jarra 14.04.2012 | The S4 will be a huge upgrade in itself. I would recommend using it for awhile by itself, at least for a month or so. by then you should know what you need to add. I couldn't imagine you need more than one. If you get the 2.5 upgrade, and money is not an option go for the F1 When the F1 comes out im sure there will be a flood of X1's being sold on here. I might snag one then. |
Nedra Fresneda 14.04.2012 | S4+X1 is a great combo, getting a pair is overkill IMO. |
Somer Vanstraten 14.04.2012 | X1:Control better sample decks, and you'll need only one. When f1 will be out, I'll sell my x1 (I use it ONLY for sample deck) because there will be remix deck, or I'll use it for direct control over fx unit 3-4. (look also for the s2, with x1, you have more controls than an s4, and it's kinda smaller(and cheaper)) |
