NI X1 VS Kontrol S4

NI X1 VS Kontrol S4
Posted on: 26.04.2012 by Alfred Takala
So for awhile ive been believeing about selling my s4 and i was believeing about upgrading to a mixer ( maybe the 800 or 900 if i can find some good prices) and they getting two x1s.
but my question is how would i be able to beat match; i dont like synch i dont feel in control of the pace and in general. so without a tempo fader or what not im not really sure how i would beat match in traktor using the x1's.Sorry if this is a stupid question but i looked around for an answer and couldnt find out. thanks ahead of time!

I've mapped it so that shift tempo makes big jumps and just tempo buttons are fine tweeks. Done away with in / out loop buttons cause i just push the encoder for that.

It's doable if i mix out the cds but not something id do all evening ... not when theres a sync button that does it for me

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Not sure what he's expecting to "learn".

This defiantly! Tried doing a B2B with my mate but gave up and just used the CDJs in the end.

Yep. Absolutely.

The other way around, I believe Traktor/SSL is a waste if you're going to use CDJs for control……but high-end CDJs still cost more than high-end turntables, even with Technics prices being through the roof.

used mk2s + TS A6 + Mixer + X1 is very attractive considering how much cheaper it is than CDJ-2000s.

I feel like i should save my S4 though just in case.
If you already have turntables that you can hold on to……that's your solution right there.

Yeah +1

If you learn to mix on turntables then cdjs are super easy too

Yeah, I would definately save up for turntables. Very easy to adjust to if you are already used to traktor and beatmatching by ear. My vinyl only dj friends come over and we have all kinds of fun. Digital and analog is where it's at.

Well you need a soundcard and an x1.

I would suggest Audio 6/8/10.

You can do it with an audio 2/4 but you are a bit limited because you can't have a preview channel or decks 3/4

The reason the audio 10 is good is because you can have 4 decks plus the preview output which for me is worth it. Also no multicores which are a pain and better led feedback on the unit as well as thru function.

Only downside is you have to plug it in to power... which i believe is a small price to pay personally as all my gear is plugged in.

Well i was just believeing of upgrading because i like the idea of using a dedicated mixer i guess; but i dont have the cash for CDJ's so i wanted a compromise i guess. Plus i though it would be a great way to learn using a mixer without having to spend so much cash.

Yeah when I want have a good old fashioned mix at home I use my decks.

Turntables or CDJs + mixer + audio 10 (or 6 or 8) + x1 is an amazing set up. I got an s2 for certain gigs where there is no gear / house parties etc or I take my x1 + audio 10 to a club/bar gig where there is a proper mixer.

I feel im pretty well covered like that.

If you want to retain beatmatching, then I wouldn't suggest ditching a system that suits it for one that doesn't.

If you're going to be using an external mixer then you're going to need a multi-channel soundcard. You might as well go the TSP route for the authentic beatmatching experience.

I tried mapping pitch faders to the X1s…never did find a good place to do it without sacrificing some other control I wanted.

You could buy decks and go with TS + X1s + mixer?
Hipolito Scionti
26.04.2012
You sort of have to use sync with just mixer and the x1.

I have got pitch and nudge buttons mapped but truth be told i use sync 100% of the time.

It's a great way to mix though

Dunno where you are but i got a djm 800 for sale in the buy/sell community

I'm using this type of setup and if I need to 'nudge' a track you just press and hold shift then use the beat/bend buttons. I however will stray over to the dark side and use sync now and then...
