S2 freezes when jog wheel is touched
Posted on: 02.07.2012 by Selene Shell
Hi DJTT

I'm having a evening mare with my S2, everything seems to be installed properly I get sound etc once a track loads up but as soon as I touch the jog wheel and sometimes the fader the S2 drops out I lose audio and controller until I power cycle the S2. I've installed traktor on my work laptop and tried it on that and it works as it should. Also when it crashes on my PC if I then plug the S2 into my work laptop and load traktor it still doesn't function.
Setup Info

Core i5, 4gb Ram, Win 7 pro, traktor 2.5

Any help appreciated guys!

Also if you are running ANY other programs while running Traktor make sure you have disabled mult-core support in the Audio Settings tab. Are you running straight up Kontrol S2 in the Audio Settings or do you have something routed via Virtual Audio Cable or Asio4All. I've also resolved problems by clicking some of the reset tabs in the Kontrol S2 Control Panel (a separate program that installs with the driver). Lastly in your "Playback Devices" on your PC's stock soundcard have you re-routed the S2 to be the default device so you can here audio from webpage's through it. If so I'd disable that so Traktor has unique control over the S2's soundcard.

I'm running the most up to date driver 3.3 and have tried the one previous to that and get the same thing. Traktor is the only thing running and the S2 is the only device running audio the inboard card is disabled. Basically the only audio I hear is from traktor.
I'm also running the PSU and have tried all of the USB ports and unplugged all other USB devices but still no joy.

Thanks for your help Abide!

It stops playing as it loses the audio card in the S2

Hmm, I decided to use a different USB cable before my gig also, but my Kontrol still froze.. It did freeze in a different manner though. Instead of switching the audio out to my built in, the music continued to play but the buttons on my Kontrol weren't responsive.

Damn! I had problems with that with my Stanton SCS3.s

Sometimes it's the easiest fix!

Guys after a second attempt at using my s2 at a gig and it doing the same thing i finally nailed the problem down to a faulty USB cable! Ever since i changed the cable no more freezing!!
Thanks for all your help on this guys much appreciated ;-)!

I've experienced drop outs on my studio machine routing Maschine software audio through Virtual Audio Cable. Seed to be almost a safety trigger as the levels coming in were too "hot". Only fixed be restarting Traktor. You're not cranking gains up to unnecessary levels are you?

I'm having the same problem, except the freezing doesn't seem to be from the jog wheel. I'm currently about to do my first club gig opening for two other DJs and while practicing earlier today my S2 froze, causing the audio output to be sent to my mid 2007 Macbooks built in audio. I emailed NI for support and they had me delete and reinstall the latest drivers... This seemed to help for a little bit, but now I just experienced the problem again. I'm praying it doesn't freeze toevening ... I'm running a mid 2007 Macbook with 4GB ram. What I'm planning to do for a worst case scenario is to have my built in output running through a DI at the venue toevening .. Hopefully that'll save my ass some time to reconnect my S2... Hope a solution is found soon.

EDIT: Well the gig went really well, except oddly enough my Kontrol S2 froze on the very last song of my set (lucky eh?) and for the first time Traktor continued to play the music via the output of the S2 but some features on the S2 were not responding. The only button that was working was play from what I remember. I'm believeing I'm going to have to send in my S2.. It'd be great to hear if others have had this problems or found any solutions.

Are you using the supplied power cord or trying to power from USB? Either way try a different USB, though I do plug my S2 into to lowest spec USB port on my laptop, though I do use external power.

It's most likely a jog wheel calibration issue. I'd bet if you look at the deck it stops playing and the play button stays green. Go into the prefrences>Kontrol S2> and calibrate both jogs.

Traktor keeps running but drops the s2 both audio and control, the s2 stays lit but doesn't do anything. If I then power cycle the s2 it comes back up in traktor and continues playing and I have control again that is until I move the jog wheel.
Also when it freezes if I plug the s2 into my work laptop it won't function until I power cycle it then it's fine and I can move the jog wheel with no issue. I shouldn't really have traktor on my work pc but wanted to test it really annoying as I definitely can't gig with it!!

Does it shut down Traktor (Not Responding) or does the deck stop and the Play button stay illuminated green?
