How do y'all handle lacking inspiration?
Posted on: 09.08.2010 by Verona Fashbaugh
There is no way that I am the only one here that occasionally hits a roadblock when it comes to DJing and producing. There's just times were I cannot produce anything of quality, and I just feel largely uninspired. I'm not going to force myself to try to produce something, because we all know how that would turn out.

If anyone says something like "I never get tired of it because when you find something you love you never get tired of it, music is my life..." I will slap you back to 1955. Say hi to Marty McFly for me.

But seriously, there's nothing I love more than making music, but there's times where I just am uninspired, and don't feel like producing. How do you guys handle this?

(I'd like to take this opportunity to say that y'all isn't typically a word I would use, it just felt like the right thing to do at the time)

a nice long bike ride or swim is good for clearing your head. if youve got a block thats from stress, that'll clear it. my left ankle is shit from childhood hockey/football so im too paranoid it'll fold if i go running

see, we are'nt talking about getting messed up AND making music. if you cant make music, go out for the evening , hang with friends, have a good time (via any means you prefer). the next day you might find you have something on your mind. but it might be the next day after that as well (hangovers are a bitch).

Most of the good ones have been mentioned, I've found the best thing to do is new music, followed by caffeine. Taking breaks doesn't work that well for me because I get an irking to mix and then it's still bad.

New music is by far the best though.

This is starting to remind me of an interesting section Martin Atkins has in Toursmart about the effects different drugs have on your ears and brain in relation to making music, worth checking out.

Smoke a bowl, and work on projects that don't require inspiration. Tedious shit like going thru long ass jam sessions. At worst I took care of something I've been putting off for months, at best I'll get distracted with some little nuggets that have made the gears in my churn to life

@photojojo: Wow you really have that routine worked out! That's a great idea about doing some DJing again and finding new music. I've been so absorbed in my own producing that I really haven't spent any significant amount of time looking for new songs.

@duerr: That's a great analogy, and those are solid ideas.

Thanks guys!

yeah feeling uninspired is kind of like misplacing your house keys, the harder you try to look for them the less likely it is you will find them - it's always best to just take a step back and breathe a bit, then you realize the answer is right under your nose.

i find inspiration in everything and everywhere, but the things that usually get me hyped to do some music projects are

- working on unrelated creative projects
- shopping for new music
- enjoying and studying other people's creative work; film, television, visual art, music etc.
- listening to radio stations that play OLD music
- socialising with other creative people
- music events
- online research on whatever topic of interest might be sparking my curiousity
- caffeine

I try to do an hour or so mix a week just for fun. This is my regime that I believe will help from getting burned out again. Mixes usually go up on Saturday evening . So I don't do anything with music (except for listening to otehrs stuff) on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday. I'll start digging for new songs on Wednesday, then buy them all on Friday and start gridding for Saturday. I'm going to do something like that post punk thing I did once a month I believe so that's a break from the normal as well.

So change it up a little, maybe start doing some regular DJ'ing again just for fun. Make a goal of finding a new song or three or five every week just to listen to. Change the genre up on those songs and I bet you'll soon find inspiration from something there. learn a new instrument. Did someone say something about a midi accordion?

You obviously love music, but I can tell you from experience that that's not enough alone to keep you from getting burned out. Vary up your game a little bit and that will broaden your range in the end.

Most of all have fun!!!

other than taking a break, listening to and/or buying new music generally helps as far as DJing goes. get a couple of new tunes and go crazy.

when it comes to producing, I've yet to find the ultimate recipe and I guess everybody has their own approach. it's just as you said, creativity cannot be forced - but there's so much stuff flying around the intarwebz, generally zapping though youtube for a while will trigger someting eventually.

Yeah...take a break....

When you go back...it will be super fun again.

I listen to older tunes that used to rock my world and try and gain inspiration from that!

Also listen to another genre of music.

Toke a blunt ....works for me!

I feel this urge that I should be producing all the time though. It's kinda like my brain is depended on it. If I don't at least open FL once a day I'll feel like a wasted a day. I'm weird.

And yes I am paying all the loans, which is really uh... it's just super. I had to take private loans and government loans, which hopefully I'll pay off before I retire.

Looks like the overwhelming theme here is to try something different. Sounds like good advise to. I have other things I do running, bicycles, motorcycles, backpacking, etc... that all get different amounts of quality time from me because I'll get tired of doing one and switch to the other.

If I had followed that same advise when I was your age and not taken two residencies plus a bunch of other stuff for one of the clubs in the 80's I might never had quit then.

After Is tarted mixing a few months back, I found the best thing to do when I find my mixing to be absolue crap is to take break.

I picked up Starcraft 2 a few weeks ago. At first I was worried that it would take over mixing (and eventually producing) as my primary hobby. But I found that it is the perfect balance as something to do when I do not feel like mixing.

I also take time to listen to music that I still love to lsiten to (Protest the Hero, System of a Down, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, etc.)

Doing all this helps me clear my mind for new ideas.

Gianmarco

(I would also liek to take thits time that I have been using "mate" a lot lately, even though I am in no way english)

the way i see it, the only time i'm not inspired is when something becomes boring, stale even, playing the same genre the whole time bores me so i switch it up and stay inspired!
