Allen & Heath Xone 4D Posted on: 09.03.2009 by Madge Niemira Anyone using the Allen & Heath Xone 4D with traktor pro? If so, is it pretty stable? | |

Time will come (as it did with CD's) that clubs will be buying MIDI's and all the DJ will have to do is plug and play. (Theses day's can't come soon enough). Regarding "bedroom" or "studio" then from what i've seen and heard (and i've also had the privilege to play with Xone 4D) this is the best of the best and will become industry standard. It is already used on all major tours so most DJ's are used to it and once the cost comes down, clubs will start buying them. For Venues at the moment i would be reluctant to bring them, regardless of the size because the other DJ would be all over it and you would never leave. lol My thoughts. If you have the money and are serious about it, then buy it because they will be everywhere. And if money is tight and you want to just learn Traktor and the whole MIDI game, buy a BCD3000. It's cheap and trust me, a hell of a lot of fun. My 2 cents. |

In order to use it you need the drivers installed on your laptop and more importantly your music software configured to use it. Not only does it take a great deal of time to get the mapping set up, but learning the mapping so it is second nature also takes time. Most Dj's do not have a Xone 4D at home to do this with. Without the preparation, its just another mixer. The last thing any Dj wants to do during a set is spend their time trying to figure out what the many knobs and faders do, which is different depending on the software and user preferences. |

Vernetta Sulenski 30.06.2009 | It is quite large in size. I've seen several reviews where their main complaint is the fact that you can't really play out with it.. Luckily for me I have to bring my own gear to my gig. If I ever were to play at a different venue, I'll probably run into issues where they will be hesitant about letting me plug in my 4D to their system. That's why I still keep my audio 8 around. |
Roni Batchan 21.06.2009 | Hey, This isn't meant to be a facetious comment, so please don't anyone take it the wrong way! I've been looking at the xone 4d in awe for an age now, and dreaming about being able to use it with Traktor etc.. the only problem is obviously the steep price tag. I've also been believeing hard what mixer to get, as I'm obviously really accustomed to using a DJM 800 (as they're absolutely everywhere I go...) - which made me believe -- is there any point in splashing out on a xone 4d, with all the midi mapping, if i could only use it in the studio? It seems far too hefty to take round, and would be a pain in the arse to whack out at a venue, unless the event was being organised and the gear being hired.. I'd really appreciate everyone's opinion on this - is this just an elaborate toy for the bedroom DJ, and for extremely classy mobile DJs? Because if that's the case, then I don't believe I'd be prepared to splash out the cash on one of those bad-boys, when I could get some sort of portable midi controller that I could actually play out with in venues. Enlighten me! Cheers Belch |
Rominic Stephen 21.06.2009 | The Xone 4d is a serious weapon which should be handled with extreme care! |
Kayleen Positano 20.06.2009 | How much better is the 4d than the 3d, out of curiosity? I'm more than a little bit strapped for cash, but I really really want one of these. (I've got a hercules RMX at the moment) I thought about the NS7 for a small while, but decided I wanted something with more knobs, buttons, and lights. (although, price may force my hand a bit) So anyway, back to my question: is the 4D worth the extra money over the 3D, and why? Edit: Oh, and just as an FYI, I use Traktor right now, if that makes any difference. |
Vernetta Sulenski 19.06.2009 | I agree, the 4D is great. It's amazingly stable, the sound out of it is clean and it has alot of features. My MIDI mapping is pretty minimal as well. I use decks 1 & 2 for timecode vinyl. The cue buttons for those two decks act as modifiers to turn the jog/cue off so I do not accidently hit those. I also have the effects mapped along with the loop and transport buttons. I'm believeing about adding a way to toggle the third deck into timecode as well. The fourth deck's input is used for recording so no timecade can be assigned to that one. Not like I'll use 4 timecode decks anyway. |
Liz Mirabito 18.06.2009 | I've had the 4D since November and it's great. Amazing sound quality and no problems with Traktor for me. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Highly recommend it. |
Melida Matlin 17.06.2009 | Hey guys, Gone from 1200's to digital (mac pro, traktor dj studio & bcd3000) loving the combo, but its time to upgrade. Sound quality and functionality is the key. Been checking out the latest controllers from Numark (NS7), Hercules, M-Audio etc, then came across the A&H Xone 2D and wow what a machine. Am now looking at 4D with traktor, have seen the Richie Vid and love whats going on. Has anyone out there used this with traktor dj and whats the sound/sync like? Also noticed that Deadmau5 uses this. Thanks |

Even though I have a few minor things that I havnt figured out yet its a breeze to play with. I have a quite minimalistic midimap to it with no modifiers as I will not use that many functions. I have no trouble with the 4D not being recognized by the computer, no crackling sound (even with key adjustment on all 4 players), no sound dropouts... actually no problems at all that I can believe of. Sure, I paid big bucks to get it but I believe it was worth every penny. |

This gives the artist a more or less empty canvas to paint midi mappings on as opposed to hardware dedicated functions that make you pull your hair out as a power user! |

Burma Uhrik 05.04.2009 | they;ve annonced the 4 fx banks in the next release, 1.2, but as with any release they won't confirm a date for it yet |
Hertha Fang 03.04.2009 | 4 fx banks? when is this supposed to happen? |
Burma Uhrik 02.04.2009 | it has cue/mix dial, cue multiple channels, you get master if no channels selected. so pretty similar to the 92 I believe getting the midmi map just right seems to be an on-going process, I'm always tweaking it, but that's all part of the fun, believeing of new things to do with all the possibilities. not sure what to do when they introduce the 4 fx banks, whether I want to dedicate another row of knobs to fx, or use modifiers to control fx 3 & 4. |

Vernetta Sulenski 02.04.2009 | Hey Tubby, Does it support split headphone cueing like the Xone 62/92? I currently have a 62 and am believeing about getting a 4D. |
Burma Uhrik 28.03.2009 | using that setup, routing through internal sounrcard to the 4 mixer channels. TCV, TCCD and midi conrol all on hand. Great if using at home, though the 92 and 2 * 1d may be more flexible if you're playing all sorts of places, you can just load 1 or 2 1d's and plug into house mixer rather than carry your own mixer. I'm still having a lot of trouble with it, often have to restart traktor 3-4 times before it recognises the xone, midi stops working mid set, though sound works fine, decks get stuck in relative mode, but work again in all modes when I restart. Cannot isolate issues to the xone or traktor though. Make sure you get a serial number 900000+, they are supposed to have fixed some issues by then, though not all. All that said, I love playing on it when it all works. To have all the flexibility of cd, vinyl, midi, effects, without having to go to a keyboard for any of it really lets you get creative. |
