Your thoughts on the Denon DJ - DN-S1200...

I am looking at this CD Player/Midi controller and I would like to know if anyone has used it or owns it. I am not quite ready to completely stop using CD's. I am also currently using FL's Deckadence also with a Numark Total control. Thank you.

Well, Serato & Numark seemed to have figured out the spinning platter in pretty short order. Denon has been at it for a lot longer and have failed to secure a partnership or find a platform to support their midi platter implementation. They are, however, very good at directing you to the NI community s. There's no doubt in my mind that Denon make good quality gear, they just don't support it well. Their resources are focused mainly on their "Mobile DJ" clientele. So if you are looking at doing Weddings, bar mitzvahs, and birthday parties, by all means go Denon. If you are looking for gear for creative DJing, I'd look elsewhere.

come on ,
denon makes good products...
about the 5500 , the problem is that the platter is motorised , it means you cant use it as a scatch on/off jog while in midi ( you can scratch with it , but it wont send a note message if you touch the platter ), that is a huge limitation.

but you can scratch using a timecode disc .

now some mapping files exist and are shared on the denon dj community .

I have a Denon DN-H5500 gathering dust. The midi implementation sucked. Neither Denon or NI ever bothered developing a native TSI for it. There were a bunch of promises from Denon which never came to be, such as a mac version of their software manager. Denon products are for wedding DJs. That's their market, and those are the products they continue to support and focus on. Everything else they do, they do half ass. If you want to get into creative club DJing, go with a Pio, Serato, or Vestax VCI-100 / VCI-300. They are companies that focus almost exclusively on Club DJs. Numark are OK, but they are quite happy producing sub-par entry level gear. Expect that "Made in a sweatshop" feel to their kit.

I just recently sold 2 of these.

They are good little decks. I did have a few issues where it wouldn't read cds first time round. I had to keep ejecting it and putting it back in before it read it. I know someone else who owns and set and they've had the same problem. Should hopefully be resolved with a future update though. I mainly used my hard drives to overcome this.

I tried them out as midi controllers just before I got rid of them. They worked pretty well with Traktor. Never used them with any other software so can't comment on how they would preform.

They are also good that you can plug a hard drive into them plus a keyboard to allow quicker searches for tracks. Although you do have to have all the tags sorted on all your tunes plus set it up with the mangement software which is provided but that doesn't take too long.

Hope this helps.
