Numark total control issues
Posted on: 06.06.2010 by Armanda Weik
Hi, I'm just getting started as a bedroom DJ hopefully I'll be able to play parties and join the student radio when I start university in september.

I've been using traktor and bought a Numark Total Control. I know some people say it's a "plastiktoy" but really I believe it does the job i need pretty well and has a very user friendly layout for traktor.

My problem is the TC stops working when I connect my USB sound card (just a very small cheap single output device).

I have 1 root USB port so swapping the devices around different ports hasn't helped. I have tried using a power cable for the TC but it made no difference. I have yet to try a powered hub because I can't find one among my friends, would it help?

My laptop specs are:
Windows 7
2.1Ghz AMD Athlon dual core
4GB DDR2 ram

One last thing, I'm using asio4all, and always have to even when the monitor headphones are not connected because traktor crashes when i connect it straight to the internal Realtek card. Is it possible to not use asio4all? If not is it possible to use other audio programs such as youtube at the same time as traktor? If nothing else the current situation is a pain because i need to close other programs before opening traktor not just stop audioplayback.

thanks soooo much to anyone who can help I have been struggling to find any information on it searching online.

Totally agree with everything in this thread. The TC is an awesome, intuitive controller, but I've had mine for about a year and a half now and my Deck B cue button and my Deck B Key buttons have degraded and give me somewhat shifty results sometimes (ie multiple activations on one press).

The TC has awesome mapping potential, I've created one where the bottom three buttons can be turned into beatmashers. It's here:

I agree with djstormeagle and jdog667jkt, at the end of the day it's all about the music,
I run a omni control with one version of djstormeagle's 4 deck tsi, it works great and love it (yes the total and omni are one and the same).

Even if you have the best of the best in gear and your music is for 3rd graders,
no matter.

My advice would be get a controller and sound card that you could afford, paint it ultra cool, map the shit out of it and rock place out.

Cheers for the response mate. The plastic is broken but the control still works. I have the knob and can still use it if I place it back and put a bit of downforce on it. I was contemplating using a dab of superglue to temporarily patch it but kinda thought that might cause problems with it later on.

is the plastic broken or did it just come off? i havent taken it apart at all so cant offer any advice about that, but could you try to rotate the potentiometer inside the box with a thin pair of tweasers or pliers? then you know if that bit works at least

I'm going slightly offbase here but I have managed to break the effects wet dry control on the left effects bank on my total control off. I'm a bit worried about dismantalling the controller without knowing what I'm doing to fix it. But without dismantalling the controller it appears to be just the plastic washer that fixes the knob to the board that is broken. Any advice either on the part needed to be replaced or an easy fix would be very appreciated.

wow awesome. I dont believe there's a way to just swap the tracks on 2 decks after looking into it, which is a shame. instead it just duplicates one onto the other every time

2. Yes, I have a 20 minute mix on my ipod ready to go in case traktor crashes. I never had to use it yet, but I always have it at hand just in case.

5. I'm actually working on a 4 deck control mapping right now. The button under the large knob now toggles between a/b and c/d control. Folder search is now done with left shift + large knob. Since I don't really use folder search except when getting set up, this made sense for me. I'm still working out deck copy, LED status bugs, and how to control volume (I'm not really a fan of soft takeover). When it's finished I'll post an updated .tsi and vid in my thread.

about no. 2. do you use the ipod just in case traktor crashes and hope you can fix it in time to carry on?

about no.5 What I was trying to set up is a modification of your mapping to help control decks C and D. My idea was to add a new modifier, toggled by pressing the right hand Key button and the large middle knob (the one used for navigation). This would then make all the controls then switch form deck A to deck C and from deck B to deck D.

I can't see a way to make that work so instead I will investigate swapping tracks between decks, maybe using left KEY and the SELECT and FILTER ON/OFF buttons for it.

So lets see- so much to respond to!

1. Thanks for your support, I just get fed up sometimes when people are all condescending about the Total Control. I rock it, it works. Period.

2. As for sound cards, the main things is does it have clear, loud outputs. I use a Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ and would highly recommend it. Same components in the cards used for timecode control, just a smaller size. You can mix everything in Traktor and run one output master and the other as monitor, or if there is an external mixer run one output as deck a and the other as deck b while cuing through the external mixer. For a 100 bucks its a great little card with a flexible setup, no mic input though so I had to get a separate mini mixer to run Traktor, the mic, and the backup ipod through (I use a Behringer Xenyx 502 - $45)

3. Youtube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSMSWXorRSA

4. I'm still messing around with the LPD 8 to see how I want it mapped. Right now I have four pads for cues 5-6 and four pads for triggering effects while they are held down. Knobs are mapped to the four effects knobs on units 3 and 4. Pad mode activates functions on deck a, CC mode activates functions on deck b. Great for messing around with cue juggling. Keep an eye out, I'm also developing a tight, 2 deck mapping for the LPD8 so it can be used as an all in one controller. Will post when finished.

5. As for three modifiers, what exactly do you mean? As in, can a button have three functions? If so, then yes. My mapping does this - play.pause also doubles as cue 3 and delete cue 3 when the various shifts are held down. Really there are an unlimited number of functions that can be mapped to the buttons, but in the end it just gets confusing for the user to quickly remember and activate them.

@boomboom90
Stormeagle's mapping is on here http://djranking s.com/community /showthr...meagle+mapping

it's so much better than the preset mapping that comes with traktor and must have taken ages to make.

is it possible to put 3 modifiers on a function?

@stormeagle

definitely the right mentality.. who cares who has what.. as long as the music being rocked is danceable, then it's all good

i have a vci-100 and i love it.. it was a perfect fit for me but everyone is different and people rock it all in different ways

@stormeagle You are the man and I definitely agree with this. It's all about how you use your tools not how much they cost. It seems like some people on this blog are made of money and as much as I envy them, I am not so I have to make do with what I can buy at the time. $300 not only bought me a good controller with a sound card and an amazing program but it opened the doors for my creativity. Any links to specific youtube videos?

I'm actually using your mapping at the minute stormeagle it's awesome! I'm going to make my own once i know i have the time to sit down and do it right.
I've been believeing of getting another controller at some stage, preferably something to try beat juggling on or make it easier to run more than 2 decks (planning to set up some simple beats made in ableton alongside mixing songs together eventually)

What do you use the LPD8 for? it looks pretty good.

I have rocked lots of college parties with a Total Control and a LPD8. It's not the cost of the controller, its how you use it - check out my youtube video on my TC mapping. How I see it, the VCI-100 is more expensive since its made of metal and because it has the touch sensitive jogg wheels. Since I don't care about the TC being plastic (its in a gear case so I'm the only one looking at it most of the time) and I don't scratch, it's great for my needs. In fact, I much prefer its simple layout to the VCI-100's more complex layered modes. The really big difference between the two is more complicated features for advanced users, for example super knobs (on/off notes for faders at top, bottom, and half)

I just wish more VCI-100 users and controllerists would apply the same "it's not the gear, its how you use it" principle so oft heard in vinyl vs. cd vs. laptop debates to controller choice. The TC is a perfectly respectable piece of kit and if I show up at a club in the future with it and they don't like it, too bad for them. It's what I rock and if I can play just as good as the next guy, what's the difference.

I haven't had any problems with it connection wise (using a Mac) or hardware wise after a year of use.

I agree somewhat, however with a little inginuity (sp?) and creativity anything can be done. I'm planning my next move to be something along the lines of the Novation Launch Pad which would give me most capabilities I do not have with the Total Control.

I would definitely feel more comfortable with another controller handy, but I do agree aside from the quality the TC really is a good controller that can give you a lot of mapping possibilities in Traktor. Along with a good side kick controller you can definitely do some work with it.

I don't really know too much about soundcards, however the DJ/IO seems like a pretty good beginner sound card. It has 2 outputs, 1headphone and 1 mic input. From my current standpoint (and possibly somewhat naive) I would say that I don't have any future plans to update my sound card at the moment, 2 outputs seems like all I need for now, however if you're really looking to update it I would go for one of the Native Instruments sound cards because they're offering free upgrades to Traktor Pro/Traktor Scratch Pro. Hope this helped Andy!

The conflict between the 2 devices seems to be pretty fundamental. It doesn't just involve Traktor, when I connect the TC second it comes up with an error message saying the hardware is unrecognisable.

I'm just wondering... even if the DJ I/O works, could it end up being a right pain later down the line if i get more into DJing and need a high quality sound card for a club evening ? Does you know if the DJ I/O is good enough?

I might just go to the local digital village shop and see if they'll let me just sit there trying sound cards and buy whatever works.

I have the Numark Total Control as well and I have had some issues that happen when selecting a sound card in Traktor and having it crash. I do not really know the root of this problem however it still lets me select my sound card it just has two names for it on the selection screen for some reason, so I just have to select the one that doesn't bring down Traktor most of the time. As for the soundcard, I have heard that you need to run the DJ/IO sound card with the program or at least get the updates from it, this is the soundcard Numark has made for the Total Control. I am not too knowledgable about the technical shit but this is just what I have heard/thing. So may be look up things about where to download the DJ/IO update or something like that. Hope this helps/what you are looking for.
