wireless USB port?
wireless USB port? Posted on: 01.01.2011 by Danae Dumler I'm looking around the web for some kind of USB port that connects wirelessly so that I can have a controller without a cable. I know there are such things but I'm at a loss for what to look for -- "usb wireless" searches all bring up network adapters. I'm just looking for the ability to plug in a dongle and have a battery powered unit to plug into. Any ideas? | |

Joan Kollmorgen 04.01.2011 | The first game pad i hacked was a wireless one and It worked great. 4 faders and 12 buttons (not enough for a midi fighter style though) If you only need buttons you could use a wireless keyboard as mentioned before. This will give you around 70 plus independent buttons (before using shift ect) As for led feedback.....It's not going to happen unless you go down the Arduino route or hack an old midi controller with midi feedback. You can get basic led feedback by wiring in some led's and resistors to a game pad which works good for toggle buttons but not so good for momentary. |

Carlena Dechand 03.01.2011 | Easier and cheaper to go down the route of a custom controller... There is no reason that a midifighter could not be made wireless so long as power and transmission are covered, although this would increase production cost a fair bit for including a function that not many people have a use for. |

Janyce Henningson 02.01.2011 | If its for a custom build why not just use a wireless gamepad like you already suggested |
Carlena Dechand 02.01.2011 | Reminded me of this aswell... Costs a small fortune too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myQJc7-Xw9Q |
Carlena Dechand 02.01.2011 | HID to MIDI is a piece of cake though isnt it!? Personally i would just do something like this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brand-New-2-4G...item2a0ca02fac |
Danae Dumler 02.01.2011 | Hmmm I found this: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MidAir.html That would do the trick except I need to convert the midifighter information from USB to MIDI first? I guess I could get a USB to MIDI cable? Seems like an expensive and assbackwards solution; that midiair alone is $100. I'm going to have to give this some more thought.... |
Carlena Dechand 02.01.2011 | That was my first thought, The base could easily be modelled on a wireless keyboard/controller! |
Danae Dumler 02.01.2011 | Actually I just watched the video and even the one I just linked has a 5V power adapter for AC. |
Danae Dumler 02.01.2011 | Yeah it's for a custom build; I am believeing about just building a battery pack for the thing. I basically just want a wireless midifighter (though I'm planning to add a few other things to it); no reason this should require extensive battery power. I have a video game controller that runs off a battery and sends a signal to a USB dongle; why would a controller be so much different? I believe the problem is theres just not enough need for such a thing so nobody's bothered developing them. But before bluetooth there was an array of keyboards, mice, and pointers that communicated to the USB port in the same way, so there'd be no reason there couldn't be one with a port on the other end instead of a mouse or whatever. I did manage to find this http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/revie...ver-with-base/ which basically is what I need but the price is way more than I want to spend on this, heh, so I might get a $30 wireless hub and jury rig a battery pack for it with some AA batteries. |
Carlena Dechand 02.01.2011 | Is this for a custom build? |

Cindi Freiler 02.01.2011 | Alright just a heads up: even though they are thought to be "high speed" you can never rely on them like you would with a normal usb cable. If I were you I would use the standard usb cable. :d |
Leeanna Ayla 02.01.2011 | I believe if one exists it's in the future and will be after you build it. |

Can't find that sort of thing anywhere though hrmmmm... |
Janyce Henningson 01.01.2011 | Didn't see that you wanted battery powered as well - I doubt such a thing exists. I know you can get battery powered hubs - but never seen a wireless one. |
Maisie Marras 01.01.2011 | you can get one of those wireless chargers (like the one from energizer) and find a tip that fits i dont know if this will work on any of the things because a) i cant see if the power cord is detachable B) what the part you plug the power into looks like C) clicking on that google link simply takes me to google uk, so i dont even know what the usb thing like like |
