Torn
Torn Posted on: 09.04.2011 by Staci Schulthess I dj'd 10 years ago of course on vinyl, life happened, and it's always been calling me back. I've been waiting on the digital technology to mature, but just love the feel, sound and process of buying a physical record. But, vinyl prices have shot up so high. I really like the boutique controllers, but of course, they are sky high, some hard to get. I've always been one of the odd balls who likes rare gear that others don't have. Something I need to get over and focus purely on the music, what we're all in it for anyway. But, I'm an admitted gear queer. Not into the CD decks. I love the endless possibilities with software. I've been looking at the Otus, the new SCS.4DJ, the DTT 100 package, 4midiLoop, Faderfox, or just building my own. If I go digital, sound quality is a must, so I will have all my files in.wav or .flac. I like the new Stanton as I can add a 2TB drive in the bottom bay, and store my tunes in lossless. If I go back vinyl, try to find a pair of 1210's, new Vestax or Stanton STR-150's with either a Rane Empath rotary or Rodec. Maybe I should just keep waiting, seems it's on a great course, and lots of new interfaces are coming out almost weekly. But damn the feel of wax, the artwork..... | |

Lilliana Perris 09.04.2011 | I was bored of CD's so got TT's again and a mixer...and was gonna start scratching....after about 15 years of Djing. Realized that the wax was fucking costly and that I could not get what i wanted. So i started researching DVS. Serato or Traktor. Then I saw controllers....sold my mixer and got a VCI100...Audio4DJ....and some timecodes and got TSP. The controller is not gonna do it for you feeling wise. If you can get over that cool. But these things are modular....you can make a hybrid setup to suit you! I found mine...and am in love with DJin all over again! |
Staci Schulthess 09.04.2011 | I believe the two biggest hurdles for me are the feel of the vinyl/platter, and the preference for the physical format. Cuing vinyl just feels so natural, I did try the VCI-300, but didn't have the chance to really put it to the test. |
Antonetta Wikel 09.04.2011 | Well with the digital/midi world you can make your own custom controller to your exact specifications. Somebody on here recently posted a custom button & fader controller with a killer wood finish. Looked retro in style for sure. I'd suggest just noodling around with various pieces of gear at your local shop to see what strikes your fancy. I went from Vinyl, to Cd's and now to midi controllers with Traktor and external mixer. I still keep a turntable and CD decks but to be honest I haven't really used them since changing over. |
