Modding X1 Knobs etc
Posted on: 31.03.2011 by Brock Ricapito
I've scoured the community s for as much info as possible but i wanted to ask some questions that would help me find solid answers.
I would like to modify my Kontrol X1s in a manner similar to this
big props to Deejaysoul for that, since I am ripping that picture from another thread. Anyway, I am under the impression the knob shaft of the X1 is 6.3mm or 1/4th" but I haven't been able to find confirmation on that, but if I am not mistaken the knobs are D-shaped. Now, I treat my controllers very carefully, and am a bit nervous about just yanking the knobs off the controller. How does one go about properly modifying the knobs without screwing anything up?
Also, do the different knobs on the X1 have different shaft sizes?
I would be extremely grateful for guidance and general tips.

well the knobs i ordered haven't arrived yet and i guess they will never come. i wouldn't advice you to buy anything from tube_buyer on ebay. he doesn't respond to mails/ebay-messages, didn't send the product and on top of that it looks like he sells the personal infos he gets to other companys as i got spam mails directly reffering to the purchase. kind of a worst case scenario for buying on ebay..

what a bummer, the knobs would have looked great. now i have to start another search through the internet to find a good alternative.

edit:
got the item today. still not the best seller as he din't responce to any messaged but at least sends the product. knobs don't fit that well but i could make it work with a little tweaking.

Thanks Ajrindy, yes the knobs I used are for 1/4" shaft and also fit using a set-screw which means I cant pull the knob off during a gig. I forgot the height of the shaft, but lucky the knobs I used set screws, since some of the knobs have a deep inset. So it allowed to set it higher especially with pull down encoders. I got the knobs at Radio Shack. I used a mix of 1" & 3/4" knobs, they feel better the 1/2 knobs the S4 and X1 had.

Yeah those big gold knobs more than likely are just round with a set screw. try hardware stores.

I just want to throw this question out there because some other people might find it useful (I searched for it before making this thread)

I'm guessing the answer is yes and yes, but It would be great to have confirmation.
Also, can anyone recommend some places to purchase cool knobs? I have found places on ebay, but I would be happy to have more sources.

thanks a bunch for the responses guys.

Knob heaven for me is mammoth electronics: http://www.mammothelectronics.com/category-s/25.htm

I replaced some of my VCI knobs with their black aluminum numbers, very sweet chunky feel to them. But honestly I don't see the point of replacing the knobs on the X1 or the S4 -- the rubberized ones these machines come with are REALLY nice. I've tried both the Radio Shack knobs on the S4 pictured and just as far as the feel of the knob, I feel like it would be a downgrade (particularly for the little ones). Though I do prefer fatter knobs in general, so there is room for improvement. Custom knobs like those McIntosh ones are another more high-end way to go though more expensive of course...

many many kudos and thank you deejaysoul!
It was originally your mod, so who could better advise me than you yourself?
Thanks a lot.

after a while being away from here and not looking at modding, I looked around again this afternoon and have been unable to find as many good knobs as I wanted...
can anyone clue me in on some good sites to shop for knobs?
I have a couple, but not exactly the ones that I would like.
thanks guys

That's pretty pimp looking. I believe they're 6.3, but I'm not 100% on that either.

They're all D-shaped and with the same shaft size.
It's just that I'm not sure if they're 6mm or 6.3mm, someone would better confirm you first. I changed mine but can't remember if they're 6 or 6.3mm.
For taking off the knob, don't be affraid : 2 fingers, hold tight & pull them off
The pot himself is "fixed in the X1", you just can't take anything else apart the knob doing this.
