Help with Ableton Live 8 and MPK25
Posted on: 05.04.2011 by Jacqulyn Cruson
Hello! I am currently working on incorporating Ableton into my VCI100 Traktor sets, and I recently got an Akai mpk25. When I plug it in everything works fine, except for the knobs and play/record/stop buttons don't do anything. They are sending midi signals but nothing is happening. Do I have to map these myself? I was under the impression that MPK25 was preset with the Ableton software. Any help would be appreciated

Sorry it's taken so long to get back, work gets in the way!

Have you clicked "Dump" located in the MIDI tab, next to the section in the table that you select your MPK in? It will display a message that asks if you want to rewrite the presets on your device. Make sure your MPK is set to the "01LiveLite" preset and Ableton should overwrite the MPK preset with it's own.

I have the LiveLite preset on, which I thought might be my problem since I have the full version of Ableton not the light version, but there isn't any other preset Ableton setting on the mpk25. What's weird is the mappign seems to be working, all the keys are mapped as well as the drumpads/arpeggiator/tap tempo, etc. But the knobs on the right hand side that are supposed to control the values inside each instrument do nothing.

Just to clarify... You ARE able to control functions in Ableton, only you have to map them yourself? This would indicate your computer is talking to your MPK but it isn't controlling any preset functions?

Thanks for the tips, I did set the mpk25 as the control surface and the in and outs, and im still getting nothing from the knobs and transport keys. I've tried mapping them myself but its annoying as you have to map every single instrument seperately, which would take forever considering how many instruments are in Ableton. Any other tips?

If i can just add, id recommend getting to grips with ableton properly as a standalone before even believeing about using it along side traktor.

The transport buttons don't work in normal MIDI mode unless you tell them to via the "Vyzex" companion program on your computer. Otherwise they only work for transport in whatever inbuilt preset you have selected on the MPK (eg Ableton / Logic / Reason).

EDIT: After rereading your post (if I understand this you correctly), the MPK comes with 15 presets, preset 01 being Ableton. Make sure under the MIDI preferences of Ableton, you have selected the MPK25 as a control surface, it's IN and OUT ports and that TRACK, SYNC and REMOTE are all switched on. The mapping of the knobs can be found in Ableton's own help manual.
