Built this during a slow day on the Alberta oil field, didn't lose my job but we had to improvise on the hard hat so the little guy didn't get hurt.

Stop whining about ruining their lively hood, they did something extremely stupid in one of the most dangerous workplaces in the world. They were on 6 figure salaries and probably have most of it saved as there is nothing to do with the money in these remote mining towns except spending it on girls hahaha.
I do feel its a little harsh for dismissal but at the same time i'll contradict myself and say they deserved it.

I wasn't having a go at you specifically. More the posters who believe the employer should "lighten up". These guys are working 100s of metres underground in an incredibly risky environment. It's a place that requires a zero tolerance attitude to unsafe practices. These guys know the rules and the reason they did the video was because its just so "crazy" to do this stupid meme in an underground mine!!!??## OMG ROFL what crazy mad cunts ... They also knew the potential consequences if they got caught. They really don't deserve any sympathy. |

Lang Abriel 05.03.2013 | The more I read about this story the more I believe about when I was in high school. Myspace was huge at the time and the principal/cops would just roam myspace for pics of kids drinking and then give them underage tickets or boot them from sporting activities...I always thought those kids were idiots, I was running for cover when I saw cameras come out at parties. |

Lang Abriel 05.03.2013 | Since a gold mine and google are two companies in the exact same industry
I know a person at ubisoft that was in a harlem shake video...I would've had a problem if they fired ppl for that video. |
Latoria Kavulich 05.03.2013 | Mines have extremely strict policies regarding health and safety.
Sacked for being idiots? No
Sacked for breaching "core values of safety, integrity and excellence"? Thats the companies call.
I notice they all have their hard hats on though. Not wearing one is grounds for instant dismissal btw. |

Lang Abriel 04.03.2013 | The corporation is obviously setting an example. When your paying 20-something year olds over 100,000K they will tend to get less professional and believe they run the company.
This just shows everyone else in the company that they can and will replace ppl. (Seriously, they can fill those jobs in 2 days....no college education required, tons of money, hard hours but applicants are young). I don't feel that bad for the guys to be honest, I'm sure they will make it for a year before they have to find a job, if they happened to save a few pennies (which typically doesn't happen in that industry)
The executives are developing a culture for the corporation, if you believe the direct manager of these ppl made the firing then you are wrong, this probably came down from the top. |

Lillia Datson 04.03.2013 | I suppose all the lads in afghanistan should lose their jobs for creating harlem shake videos as well? That's a bit of a dangerous working environment to say the least. Its just blowing off steam during a shift. As far as i can see there's not a lot of anything dangerous going on there.
No-ones harlem shaking a piece of Mining explosive next to a naked flame, or riding a JCB round in circles for christ's sake.
They should of got a stiff talking too at the very most, losing your job is a bit extreme. |

This. It was funny when it first appeared but then it became a thing where companies take friday afternoon off, record a corporate PR Haarlem Shake video then post a shitty edited version of it on youtube. You know what though, every time I play that tune out at a gig, the dance floor fills up. |
Doreen Schurle 04.03.2013 | Just a little follow-up:
http://news.sky.com/story/1059676/ha...ired-for-dance
Workers at an Australian gold mine lose their six-figure salaries after a video of them performing the dance appeared online.

Dione Haimes 04.03.2013 | unfortunately those guys were sacked,
but it said it was a health and safety matter and this couldve been taken RIGHT out of context,
It mentions the workers were working underground,
chances are they they weren't meant to have a phone on them, or anything not intrinsically safe due to gasses underground
who knows
very unfortunate.
and to those who believes people should be sacked for making a 5 minute video,
grow the fuck up, gain some respect, and fucking relax,
uptight cunts.
video btw:
