Behringer BCD3000 or Vestax Spin?
Posted on: 03.05.2011 by Erminia Pincock
Okay, so i'm going to buy my first DJ controller. I've been into producing music for a while, mostly on Ableton Live. Recently i've got into DJing, right now I use my M Audio Oxygen-49 on VDJ. But it's kind of awkward to use on a DJ program for me, and I also need a soundcard so i'm getting one of these 2.

I use windows 7, VDJ right now but I would like to upgrade to Traktor. and I don't scratch.

So maybe you guys who know more about it can help me out. Which would be better? it's a tough choice for me.
BCD3000 has a lot of extra knobs and buttons for effects and etc, but it's kind of clunky and ugly looking.
I like the build of Vestax Spin a lot better, but it lacks buttons and knobs.
and i'm kind of worried about the Spin because I'm on windows, and it's designed for Mac. but from what i've gathered i can still map it to VDJ and Traktor.
If someone could confirm on that too that would be great.

Thanks

Ahh i see, thanks Nales!

i decided i'm gonna get the Vestax Spin tomorrow, i wish it was a Typhoon but i can't find anyone selling one atm.

That's good to know that an Audio 2 DJ will work for an external mixer, Audio 4 and up's get pretty pricey. I will probably get an Audio 2DJ later on.
For now i might get a Midi controller like Novation Nocturn (Possibly Nano Kontrol) to control effects, i believe it will do for starting out.

I do have a Novation Launchpad already, but i cant get the LEDs to work in Virtual DJ :/
i could use that for some effects if i could get the LEDs working.

But i like the LED rings on the Nocturn, i believe it would be nice to use on the side of a DJ controller!

Wait! I smell misinformation here!!!

You can take RCA output of MIDI controller (like BCD300) into the Mixer. However, that would only give you one channel on the external mixer.

I have a BCD3000 and an Audio 2 DJ (and I highly recommend this combination). However, if you don't want the BCD3000, make sure to get an audio 2 dj!

If you are NOT scratching/will use MIDI devices, you only need an Audio 2DJ.

Plug Channel A of Audio 2 into Channel A of Mixer, Channel B to B and use your controller as a regular MIDI Controller. However, if you are using an external mixer, then there really isn't any point in getting something like a BCD3000 unless you are going to map the EQs and faders to something else.

This is what I do all the time and it works. No problems. PM me if you want to chat about specifics

Apparently you can use ASIO4ALL to aggregate windows audio devices, but I've never tried it. Core audio all the way

Aw that's a shame, i guess i'll have to get an Audio 4 or something later. I guess midi controllers will have to do for effects right now!

You'd need a bigger soundcard, Traktor can only use one audio device at a time. There may be a Windows program or something that can aggregate 2 devices like you can on the Mac, but I'm not aware of what it would be.

Oh ok, I understand. Thanks english

so if i got another soundcard like Audio 2DJ and use the built in soundcard on the controller as well, i'd be able to use a mixer with it normally? or would i need a bigger soundcard with more outputs?

You could, but there's a but.

You need a sound card with 4 output channels (2x stereo), which the spin has, but only one has an RCA connection, the other is a headphone jack. So to use it with an external mixer you'd have to get an adapter and have it permanently plugged into the headphone socket.

You can just use the controller's mixer controls with the internal mixer on whichever software you want to use though.

Ok thanks, yeah that is a good idea.

I have a question though, would i be able to plug the Vestax Spin or Typhoon into a mixer? does the soundcard allow me to do that, or can it only be plugged right into speakers?

So basically what i'm asking is, am i able to plug the Spin (or any controller with a built in soundcard) into a mixer and then use the outputs on the mixer to go into speakers? and still be able to cue songs as well?

i'm not really sure of the capabilities of a DJ controller entirely.
I'm not into scratching, I prefer using midi controllers. but i would like to be able to use a mixer with a controller.

so if someone could help me out by answering that, that'd be great

You should buy a Mixtrack and an audio 2 dj. That way you can upgrade to a better controller when you have the funds if you feel like it.

Oh yeah the novation twitch looks amazing, i just saw the demo vid for it the other day. My jaw pretty much dropped. the amount you can do with it is crazy.

If only i had the money for it!

Might want to look into the Novation Twitch too. I'm excited about that one.

Ok thanks guys. Yeah i'm also looking into Mixtrack or Mixtrack pro now, i've heard a lot of good things about it.
it just looks kind of cheap to me, but if it functions well it doesn't really matter.

another question though, if i were using Spin or Typhoon would i be able to plug it into and use an external mixer with it? and also still be able to cue?
i'm new to this, sorry if it's a dumb question

I'd look at a Numark mixtrack pro.

Other than that, as far as I'm aware, the spin and typhoon are pretty much the same other than the included mac software with the spin.

Can't really help you choose - but what I can say is that if you're believeing of switching to Traktor, and running Windows - I'd go for the Vestax Typhoon rather than Spin. It's essentially the same thing, just designed for Windows/Traktor use.
